Ultrastructural aspects of the nasal glands in the rat.

The secretory granules of the glands in both the lateral nasal wall and the nasal septum of the rat have been studied by electron microscopic techniques. The glandular tissue in the nasal septum consists of one single gland, which histochemically can be divided into a dorsal and a ventral area. The secretory granules in the acinar cells of the ventral area are electron-dense and non-confluent. The dorsal area is composed of acinar cells containing confluent, electron-grey granules and scattered non-confluent, electron-dense ones. The main part of the glandular tissue in the lateral nasal wall is situated around the ostium of the maxillary sinus and can be divided into a dorsal and a ventral part. Ultrastructural studies reveal that the lateral dorsal part resembles the glandular tissue in the ventral area of the septum. Histochemically 2 areas can be distinguished in the ventral part. The acinar cells in one area of the ventral part are characterized by the presence of 2 types of secretory granules: confluent, electron-grey (type A) and non-confluent ones with internal substructures (type B). The other area of the ventral part is composed of acinar cells containing secretory granules resembling those in the dorsal area of the septum.

Morphological and histochemical aspects of the nasal glands in the rat.

The secretory characteristics of the glands in both the lateral nasal wall and the nasal septum of the rat have been studied with a variety of morphological and histochemical techniques. The main part of the glandular tissue in the lateral nasal wall is situated around the ostium of the maxillary sinus and can be divided in a dorsal, simple branched acinous glandular part and in a ventral, very branched tubulo-acinous glandular part.. No further morphological differences can be observed with light microscopical techniques. The glandular tissue on the nasal septum consists of a large, branched tubulo-acinous gland, occupying an extensive portion of the septum. By using various histochemical staining techniques for glycoproteins, 3 different areas can be distinguished, suggesting that the nasal glands produce different types of secretory products.

Total alloplastic middle ear implant.

A total alloplastic middle ear prosthesis (TAM), composed of a spongy substance consisting of Teflon and pyrolytic graphite is presented. This prosthesis allows a safe eradication of the diseased tissue and approximates a physiological reconstruction of the sound conducting system. The results obtained in three patients with this TAM up to an observation period of more than two years are promising.

Influence of a diphosphonate on the cellular aspect of young bone tissue.

Stimulated by the rather sparse information in the literature on cellular changes induced by EHDP, we carried out electron microscopic investigations on young bone tissue and on de novo bone formation. Cellular changes could be observed during continuous administration of EHDP. The osteoblasts demonstrated temporary storing of crystalloid structures in the mitochondria, and atypical osteocytes showed persistent changes indicative of hyperactivity. The osteoclasts exhibited varying ultrastructural features with respect to the number and appearance of nuclei, Golgi, RER, and lysosomes. These changes under the influence of EHDP could be an indication of altered activity of the osteoclast. The possible interference of EHDP with bone cell metabolism is discussed.

Middle ear effusion and sinusitis.

The present investigation comprises a retrospective and a prospective study on children with middle ear effusion (MEE). It is shown that, in the majority of patients, middle ear effusion was found in combination with an infective disease of other parts of the upper respiratory system, especially in the maxillary sinuses. Lavage of the infected sinuses resulted in resolution of the middle ear effusion in about 85 per cent of the cases, while adenoidectomy, in patients in whom adenoid enlargement was found together with middle ear effusion, had only a minor effect.

Electronystagmography in the laboratory rat.

A method is described for obtaining electronystagmograms from the awake laboratory rat. Threshold valves for rotation impulse and oscillatory acceleration were determined, as well as the time constant for the horizontal semicircular canal. The time constant appeared to be small. This might be attributed to the rapid natural head movements in this species. No visual suppression of vestibular nystagmus was found in the rat.

The use of Proplast in experimental middle ear surgery.

The results of the use of Proplast, a new alloplastic material, in experimental middle ear surgery are described. This material was tested for cavity obliteration, closure of bony defects and as a columella between the tympanic membrane and the medial wall of the middle ear. Proplast was well tolerated in the middle ear cavity even in cases with inflammation of the middle ear. The implants were integrated within the recipient tissue by fibrous ingrowth occurring within one week. Bony ingrowth was observed in those cases where the implant contacted the bony wall within 3 weeks. Proplast which supported the tympanic membrane was infiltrated by fibrous tissue and incorporated in the lamina propria. No significant side effects were observed in a 6-month follow-up period although a possible influence on bone remodelling could not be fully excluded.

Effect of autonomic nerve transection on the patency of the nasal cavity.

The present study deals with the behaviour of the erectile tissue of the nasal mucosa in the normal rat and after selective transection of the autonomic nerve supply, measured with physiological and histometrical techniques. In the normal animal cyclic changes in the patency of the nasal lumen occurs with a cyclus time of 61 min, disturbances being observed in this rhythm a few weeks after transection of the various autonomic nerves. Selective transection of the main route of the sympathetic or the parasympathetic systems results in a dominance of the antagonist (congestion or decongestion). Transection of both systems does not result in a significant change in the dilated state of the nasal cavity from normal, although the cyclic activity disappears. A tendency towards a normal nasal cycle was observed several months after transection.
