Etiology and treatment of dental anxiety and phobia.

Dental anxiety and phobia afflict millions of people. Dental patients who are anxious anticipate pain and feel vulnerable and out of control. Hypnotherapy to alleviate dental anxiety and phobias has received clinical and empirical support. Our purpose in this paper is to provide a body of objective data from American Society of Clinical Hypnosis members regarding incidence rates and the relative importance of various etiological and conceptual issues in the development and maintenance of dental anxiety and treatment interventions. From these data, we constructed a model of etiology, maintenance, and treatment of dental anxiety.

[Esophagoscopy and gastroscopy in dogs and cats. Technics and indications].

A report is presented of esophagoscopy and gastroscopy in cats and dogs using flexible endoscopes. Following consideration of the basic equipment, an account is given of patient preparation and anesthesia, topography, investigation technique and normal findings. Diagnostic potential, indications and risks involved are discussed.

[Multimorbidity in aged dogs and cats].

As in humans, an increase in the incidence of concurrent diseases occurs in dogs and cats with age. To some extent considerable species specific differences occur; the dog is affected more than the cat. In advanced age more chronic diseases are observed as in humans. The following diseases show a particular predisposition in aged dogs and cats: The dog exhibits especially non-inflammatory skin diseases, cardiopathies, chronic diseases of the respiratory tract, oral cavity, liver, kidneys and urinary tract, diseases of the CNS, and tumours, whereas the cat suffers from the leukaemia complex, to a lesser extent from non-inflammatory skin and cardiac diseases, also from chronic diseases of the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidneys and urinary tract, endocrine system, and tumours.

[Two cases of colitis cystica profunda in dogs].

Colitis cystica profunda in dogs has been diagnosed in one case only. The two own cases were characterized by repeated, partly bloody diarrhea, vomitus, and painful defecation. The disease was diagnosed by clinical examination and colonoscopy with the ensuing histological examination of biopsy specimens. The disease could be managed by administration of a diet, sulfasalazine and corticosteroids.

[The test of a centrifugal hematology system for use in clinical practice].

The QBC is a centrifugal haematology system. Modified haematocrit capillaries are measured optically. The parameters haematocrit, total leukocyte count, relative and absolute values of granulocyte and lympho-/monocyte fractions, and total thrombocyte count are stated. The microhaematocrit method, the counting chamber, and the differential blood count are reference methods. Blood samples of the dog, cat and horse were used for the study. As a screening method the QBC analysis meets all requirements for the veterinary practice.

Nitrofurans in the treatment of gastritis associated with Campylobacter pylori. The Gastrointestinal Physiology Working Group of Cayetano Heredia and The Johns Hopkins Universities.

We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized treatment study in Peruvian adults with antral gastritis associated with Campylobacter pylori. Patients received either 400 mg of furazolidone (n = 14), 400 mg of nitrofurantoin (n = 24), or a placebo (n = 31) for 14 days. Endoscopy was carried out at baseline, 1 day after ceasing therapy, and 6 wk after the end of treatment to verify colonization by C. pylori and determine the extent of gastric inflammation. Treatment with nitrofurantoin or furazolidone markedly reduced or, in some cases, cleared C. pylori from the antrum (p less than 0.0005 compared with placebo). Resolution of acute gastric inflammation, as evidenced by decreased polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration and regeneration of the mucus layer, paralleled the reduction in bacterial colonization (p less than 0.005 compared with placebo). A high percentage of patients experienced relapse (recolonization by C. pylori and return to pretreatment levels of gastritis) within 6 wk after cessation of treatment. Significant relief of dyspeptic symptoms was not evident during the study.

[Hyperthyroidism in cats].

20 cases of feline hyperthyroidism are reported. The examinations were performed during 13 years. The hyperthyroid cats were diagnosed of about 23,000 cats examined in two internal veterinary clinics Giessen und Munich). Diagnosis can be performed with RIA or ELISA methods. Scintigrams had been done for examination of localization and function. Treatments were performed with radioactive iodine, thyroidectomy or thyrostatic drugs.

[The leukocyte status of surviving dogs as compared to dogs dying from parvovirus infections].

The white blood picture was examined in 135 dogs with parvovirus disease during the course of the illness. 91 dogs survived, 44 died. The surviving dogs showed higher mean total leucocyte, neutrophil, and eosinophil counts whereas the mean lymphocyte, neutrophil, and monocyte counts on the first day of the disease were lower in those dogs which survived than in those ones which died later. Increasing lymphocyte and monocyte counts appear to be a favourable prognostic sign. The older the dogs, which fell ill, were, the more favourable the prognosis turned out.
