Non-infected standardized burns and those contaminated experimentally with a constant number of organisms of a selected Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain underwent varying forms of treatment with silver sulfadiazine, cefsulodin cream and povidone iodine ointment. Wound healing was controlled by evaluating the wound area. In burns which had not been infected experimentally, healing was best without any treatment. Burns treated with cefsulodin cream showed delayed healing, though this was not significant. The most significant delay, however, was observed in wounds treated with povidone iodine. Wounds infected with Pseudomonas healed considerably better than the control group when treated prophylactically with silver sulfadiazine and cefsulodin. However, burns treated with povidone iodine again showed delayed healing.
Two experiments studied the influence of arginine-vasopressin (AVP) on cognitive processes by means of an electrophysiological measure, the late positive complex (LPC) of the event-related potential. The LPC varies systematically with cognitive processes. The classical oddball paradigm and an incidental memory task (structural encoding of emotional adjectives) were used. The two studies differed only in the dose of AVP (study 1: three time nasal application of 10 IU AVP; study 2: 20 IU). In study 1, AVP intake enhanced memory performance. The LPC elicited by oddball stimuli was not influenced by AVP, neither when compared before and after intake nor when compared to placebo treatment. However, specific influences of AVP on the LPC elicited during the structural encoding task were observed. In both studies, AVP intake resulted in a marked change of the scalp distribution of the P3 component, which is a prominent part of the LPC. Furthermore, subjects treated with the lower dose of AVP showed a more positive P3 component on emotional (negative and positive) adjectives, when compared to neutral ones. The results suggest that vasopressin influences the central nervous processing of the emotional content of stimuli.

Silicone is able to induce different immunological reactions: Local foreign body reactions with activation of fibroblasts, granuloma formation and clinical manifestation of autoimmune diseases may occur. We report 4 cases with possible autoimmune disease in connection with breast augmentation. In one case explantation lead to both clinical and serological improvement with a decrease of antinuclear antibodies from 1:1280 to 1:160. In addition we report the spectrum of silicone induced systemic side effects and discuss the possible cellular reactions as well as the immunological changes.

246 patients (average age 82.4 years) with proximal femur fractures treated with bipolar endoprothesis, sliding lag screw or Ender nailing, related to the fracture type were analyzed in a retrospective study. Preexistent diseases, duration of operation, postoperative complications, transfusions, hospital stay, mobility achieved and mortality were noted. As a result, we found a high multimorbidity related to the age, the highest requirement of transfusions in patients undergoing Ender nailing, a long period to achieve postoperative mobility, a long hospital stay, and increasing mortality with average age and average hospital stay.
