Marked evanescent swelling of the prevertebral soft tissues has been found in 2 patients with undisplaced fractures of the odontoid process. In one patient the significance of the swelling was appreciated only in retrospect and after shift had occurred at the fracture site. The experience gained from this patient alerted the radiologist and the clinician so that any further damage could be averted in the second patient. All patients with head injuries require radiography of the cervical spine. Soft-tissue swelling anterior to the atlas should be viewed in a serious light.

A reliable method of visualizing and documenting pancreatic lesions by ultrasound is described. This method is valuable for the follow-up of varying types of pathology, and it may be applied to a wider range of lesions than pancreatic. It is simple and saves time and money for the ultrasonographer and is more easily interpreted by the clinician.
The usefulness and advantages of diagnostic ultrasound (sonar) scanning as an aid in the investigation of soft-tissue masses, are illustrated in a number of patients with such masses in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. These illustrative cases show that sonar scanning can reveal the size, shape, anatomical relations, and consistency of intraperitoneal and retroperitoneal masses. Sonar scanning is particularly valuable in differentiating cystic from solid masses. Furthermore, clinically unsuspected masses can be detected. Sonar scanning is harmless, relatively quick, non-invasive and causes no pain or discomfort. These factors are of particular importance in postoperative and acutely ill patients.
