The authors present one case of pheochromocytoma which was visualized during renal angioscintigraphy using 99mTc-Sn DTPA. An area of increased radioactivity above the left kidney suggested a well-vascularized mass supporting the clinical suspicion of a pheochromocytoma on the left, which was proved by abdominal angiography. During the operation the pheochromocytoma was removed.
In March 1976, 128 persons in Camas, Washington, had laboratory-confirmed giardiasis. A questionnaire survey of 498 Camas residents revealed that 3.8% had clinical giardiasis, while none of 318 residents in a control town were ill. No associations between illness and sex, pet ownership, travel, time spent in wilderness areas, public gatherings, or food preference were found. Giardia cysts were recovered from raw water entering the city water treatment system via two streams and also from two storage reservoirs containing chlorinated and filtered stream water. Failure to remove Giardia cysts was attributed to the water plants' inadequate flocculation, coagulation, and sedimentation combined with deterioration of the filter media. Investigation of the watershed revealed no signs of human fecal contamination. Animal trapping in the watershed area yielded three beavers (Castor canadensis) infected with Giardia that were infective for specific pathogen-free beagle pups.

The significance of scintigraphic examination in four patients with hyperfunction of adrenal tissue after total adrenalectomy is described. The scintigraphic examination was done 7--8 days after the injection of 1 mCi of 131I-19-iodocholesterol using the Jumbo Thoshiba 202 scintillation camera and Informatek SIMIS 3 data processing system. Noticeable concentration of 131I-19-iodocholesterol occurred in all four patients of, in three cases in the region of the right adrenal gland and in one case in the region of the left one. Scintigraphic examination confirmed the clinical hypothesis that of cushing's syndrome recurred in these patients because of hyperfunctioning adrenal tissue left in the body after the operation. This diagnosis was given confirmed in two cases undergoing repeated operations. The scintigraphic examination allowed accurate localization of the adrenal tissue and facilitated finding it during the next operation. The authors believe that adrenal scintigraphy is at the present time one of the best methods of locating the hyperfunctioning adrenal tissue left in the body during total adrenalectomy.

Good pancreas imaging is difficult to achieve even if a computer is applied. The special computer program proposed here was developed to optimize the results and to minimize the operator interaction with the data processing system.
Described below is the radioisotope method of examining the patency of oviducts using a solution of 133Xe. Scintigraphic pictures of the uterine cavity and oviducts were obtained with a Jumbo Toshiba gamma-camera; they were subsequently analysed by an Informatek SIMIS-3 data processing system. A total of 30 women aged between 20 and 36 with primary or secondary infertility were examined. The patency of oviducts and the shape of the uterine cavity was assessed on the basis of: the overall picture of the activity of 133Xe in the uterine cavity and oviducts, the isocontours of the overall picture, curves of increasing and decreasing activity in the fallopian tubes, and the spatial picture of activity distribution in the uterus and fallopian tubes. The results of the examinations corresponded in all cases with the diagnosis made on the basis of hysterosalpingography. An advantage of the isotope method of examining the patency of fallopian tubes and the shape of the uterine cavity is the fact that it is an examination of a dynamic nature, completely safe for the patient and exposes the patients to a considerably lower dose of irradiation than during hysterosalpingography.

The sensitivity of several microporous virus-adsorbent media for reliably detecting low levels of poliovirus from 380 and 1,900 liters of drinking water by use of the tentative standard method was investigated. The virus-adsorbent media tested were (i) nitrocellulose membrane filters, (ii) epoxy-fiber glass-asbestos filters, (iii) yarn-wound fiber glass depth filters, and (iv) epoxy-fiber glass filter tubes. Virus was adsorbed to the filter media at pH 3.5 and eluted with glycine buffer, pH 11.5. The results from 44 samples demonstrated that poliovirus was detected with a 95% reliability at mean virus input levels of 3 to 7 plaque-forming units/380 liters when 1,900 liters of water was sampled. At mean virus input levels of less than 1 to 2 plaque-forming units/380 liters, the detection reliability was 66% in 76 samples when 1,900 liters of water was sampled. No significant difference in virus detection sensitivity was observed among the various virus adsorbent media tested. Overall virus recovery efficiency ranged from 28 to 42%, with a grand average of 35%. Members of the coxsackievirus groups A and B, echovirus, and adenovirus were also detected when 380 and 1,900 liters of water were sampled. These experimental observations attest to the sensitivity of the tentative standard method for detecting low levels of virus in large volumes of drinking water.
Four microporous virus-absorbent filter media for recovering low levels of virus from 380 liters of drinking water were compared. In addition two of the filter media were compared with 1,900 liters of drinking water. The filter media evaluated were MF nitrocellulose membranes (293 mm), AA Cox M-780 epoxy-fiberglass-asbestos disks (267 mm), K-27 yarn-wound fiberglass cartridges + AA Cox M-780 disks (127 mm), and Balston epoxy-fiberglass tubes (24.5 by 63.5 mm). The filters were used to concentrate seeded poliovirus from 380 liters of finished drinking water. Sodium thiosulfate was added to the drinking water to neutralize chlorine, and hydrochloric acid was added to adjust the pH to 3.5. Virus was eluted from the filters with glycine-NaOH buffer at pH 11.5. In terms of virus recovery efficiency, the filter media ranked Balston greater than Cox 267-mm greater than MF 293-mm congruent to K-27 + Cox 127-mm, but differences were slight. The Balston filters and holders were also superior to the other systems in terms of size, weight, cost, and handling factors. Experiments with 2- and 8-mum porosity Balston filters showed no statistically significant difference in virus recovery. Virus was readily detected by the Balston and the MF 293-mm systems at input levels of 12 to 22 PFU/1,900 liters. Preliminary experiments indicated that an elution pH lower than 11.5 may be satisfactory.
An apparatus has been developed, constructed, and tested for conditioning unlimited quantities of finished waters for enteric virus detection.
A simple and compact virus-adsorbing unit for efficiently concentrating human enteric viruses from 100 gallons (about 380 liters) or more of potable water is described.
