[Determination of body height from fragments of the femur].

Presenting a major problem in connection with reconstructing the height of body from the dimensions of long or pipe bones are the circumstances under which damage is caused thereto in mass accidents such as, for example, plane crashes. Such accidents often result in long bones being fractured completely, so that it is not possible for them to be directly used for reconstructing the height of body. In such cases, use can be made of the methods described by Steel (1970) who determined segments for such long bones as the femur, tibia, and humerus and also set up formulas by use of linear regression analyses, which enable the lengths of single fragments of bones to be used for estimating the overall length of bones which can then be substituted into equations for reconstructing the height of body. The procedure has been verified statistically, and suitable formulas have been established for the femur, which is the bone that lends itself particularly well to estimations of the height of body. When using these formulas, the residual variance is generally as great as 10 cm. Accordingly, it appears inappropriate for public medicolegal officers to calculate a height of body which is beset by a range of variation that is as great as this. Therefore, the 2nd part of this paper presents a possible way of determining the stature of a human body from individual segments of the femur. The limits of these size groups have been determined for data to be recorded in identity cards and other personal documents. The method is based upon the calculation of conditional probability distributions for given lengths of segments.

Silybin inhibition of amatoxin uptake in the perfused rat liver.

Silybin dihemisuccinate, in a concentration of 0.4 mg/ml, almost completely inhibited the uptake of an amatoxin by the perfused rat liver. Similary, silybin should also interrupt absorption of toxins due to enterohepatic circulation, e.g. in dog and man. This effect may become important in the therapy of human Amanita poisoning.

Cytochalasin D is able to mimic the effects of phalloidin on the rat liver.

Cytochalasin D induces a strong potassium release in the isolated perfused rat liver and leads to vacuolization of the liver parenchymal cells. These effects are similar to the action of phalloidin on the rat liver. Since phalloidin and cytochalasin act in a different way on microfilaments, it is suggested that any disturbance of the function of microfilaments can induce these effects.

[Studies of climatic factors influencing the performance of cattle in the Syrian Arab Republic. 2. Assessment fo 1968/69 climatic factors].

On the basis of the values of temperature and moisture for one year, an experimental cowshed (80 cows) on the border of the Syriain semidesert was investigated using a new evaluation scheme. The assessment was made according to three ranges of physiological compatibility. Essential deficiencies were found in the construction and in the function of the cowshed. Using the relevant literature (see part 1) on this subject, the paper tries to show that such conditions must be detremental to the performance of European cattle breeds. If cattle stay for a long time in temperature regions above the physiological compatibility range, damages to the health must also be expected in non-adapted and local breeds. Suitable devices must be built into the cowsheds to enable release of warmth from the cattle kept there. Improvements in the climate of the cowshed are part of the complex measure for increasing the performance. The paper tries to stimulate more intensive studies of the climate and its effect on the performance in animal production for other regions and countries as well.

[Studies on climate factors influencing the effectiveness of cattle production in the Syrian Arabic Republic. I. Effect of climate factors; climatic conditions in the SAR].

No previous investigations are available on climatic influences on the performance in cattle production in the Syrian Arab Republic. The reports found in the literature on the effect of the climate, especially of temperature and atmospheric moisture, are classified into physiological compatibility ranges for cattle. This makes it possible to compare different climatic regions. In the second part of the paper the values found for temperature and moisture in an experimental cowshed in the SAR will be assessed.
