Emotional, cognitive and behavioral stress can negatively affect the performance of fire, rescue and law enforcement personnel responding to emergency situations. Impaired professional performance in these crises not only endangers the incident victims, all involved responders and their families, but potentially the lives and property of entire communities. This article describes the major administrative and clinical leadership of a hospital-based Social Work department in implementing one of the few statewide critical incident stress debriefing teams for emergency service personnel in the United States. It represents a model for program development by other organizations.

To achieve favourable aesthetic and functional results in treatment of skeletal facial asymmetry, a proper morphologic diagnosis based upon detailed information is essential for combined orthodontic and surgical treatment planning. In seven cases it could be shown that CT-scans and three-dimensional CT-surface reconstructions are far more efficient than conventional X-ray techniques in analysing the individual pattern. An excellent possibility of morphologic classification is offered in combination with the skeletal classification of head X-rays. The importance of a morphologically orientated treatment plan is emphasized by selected cases. Therefore various methods of operation in maxillofacial surgery can be planned better in advance and in orthodontics, with regard to the complexity of the case, it presents a better coordination of timing in the use of fixed and functional appliances.

80 children and teenagers at the age of 3 to 14 years with isolated TMJ fractures were only treated by means of functional orthodontic appliances. After an average period of 3 years after the fracture they could be followed-up clinically, as well as radiographically. TMJ function turned out to be good in all patients. The morphological regeneration was often incomplete in older the patients and especially in deep dislocation fractures.
In four adult monks of the "macaca fascicularis" genus we surgically shifted the mandible posteriorly by 5 mm in three animals and by 10 mm in one animal. After 83, 172, 273 and 354 experimental days, the animals were killed and the TM joints were prepared for patho-histological examination. Histomorphological changes could be observed above all in spongy and cortical bone situated close to the TMJ. There were no striking pathological findings, however, in condylar cartilage and the articular disk.

8 patients, aged between 9 and 13 years, had undergone surgery for fractures of the mandibular body. Miniplates were used for fragment fixation. No growth disorders or anomalies in tooth eruption were observed during a follow-up period of up to 9 years.
By means of surface coils, magnetic resonance makes it possible to achieve high-resolution images of the temporomandibular joints. An outstanding tissue contrast with direct imaging of the Discus articularis and changes in its placement can be obtained by choosing adequate sequences.

A forced bite results in displacement of the mandible and malposition of the condyles. The terminal hinge position is a useful point of reference in treatment planning for the surgical correction of forced bites, since it is, among others, independent of the occlusion. Thus, it provides an ideal condyle-fossa relation.
Time-tested procedures for the surgical closure of palatal perforations are reported. Apart from local flap procedures emphasis is being placed on the possible applications of lingual flaps and temporal muscle flaps in the closure of a perforated palate.
