Virus-like particles in paraspinal muscle in scoliosis.

Biopsy material from the skeletal muscle (paraxials) of 21 patients with scoliosis was examined by light and electron microscopy. Virus-like particles, 17 nm in diameter with a crystalline structure, were identified in the skeletal muscle fibres of four patients. Associated changes in the sarcoplasm included swelling of mitochondria, presence of lipid droplets, and vesicular structures. Serological studies and culture for virus isolation gave negative results. An excess of lipid (predominantly in type 1 fibres) was noted in the skeletal muscle of several other cases. The significance of these findings is obscure, but the morphology of the paraxial muscles of patients with scoliosis and controls is currently being investigated in greater detail.

Late recurrence following acute haematogenous osteomyelitis.

The results of the treatment of 168 children with acute osteomyelitis in Auckland between 1951 and 1955 were reviewed with a particular interest in late recurrence. The early failure rate of 20 percent is comparable with other recent series. Follow-up of the 134 apparent cures revealed five late recurrences, an incidence of 3.0 percent but follow-up was incomplete (44 cases) and the late recurrence may be higher.

The incidence and pattern of knee injury associated with dislocation of the hip.

A retrospective survey of 135 posterior dislocations and fracture-dislocations of the hip was carried out in order to define the pattern of associated knee injuries. Thirty-five patients had sustained a significant injury to the knee, of which twenty-five were clearly attributable to a direct blow on the front of the knee (fractured patella, traumatic chondromalacia, fractures of femoral and tibial condyles) and ten were compatible with valgus, varus or rotational forces (medial, lateral and cruciate ligament tears). The second type of injury has not been widely recognised but it is important that it should not be overlooked.

Progress in reducing the TCDD/TCDF content of effluents, pulps and wastewater treatment sludges from the manufacturing of bleached chemical pulp.

This report summarizes the data received in response to NCASI's 1996 "Industry-Wide Dioxin Profile" and data on tissue concentrations in fish taken downstream from mill discharges. The current survey was the sixth effort to update industry accomplishments since the "104 Mill Study" in 1988. As of the end of 1996, bleaching export vector TCDD/TCDF contents have been reduced by 94% on a TEQ basis from the 1988 level. The few observations above nominal detection limits tend to be from mills that have not supplied new data to NCASI. Current releases are approaching the point where the difference between the estimate and "non-detect" levels is hardly quantifiable. The analysis of data on fish tissue taken downstream of pulp mill discharges showed an average 24% per year decrease, reflecting reductions in effluent loadings.
