Some determinants of fear about AIDS among Australian college students.

An 18-item questionnaire assessing attitudes toward AIDS and homosexuality was administered to 420 Australian tertiary students. The predictive power of attitudes toward homosexuality, empathy toward AIDS sufferers, knowledge about AIDS, church attendance, age, and sex was tested using independent and stepwise multiple-regression analyses. In the stepwise analysis attitudes toward homosexuality and empathy toward AIDS sufferers were the major contributors to fear about AIDS. Church attendance and age improved the over-all prediction significantly, but only slightly. In the independent analysis all variables, except church attendance, were significant predictors. Educational programmes on AIDS should address the relationship between homosexuality and fear of AIDS.

Infectious crystalline keratopathy.

Infectious crystalline keratopathy was first described in 1983. affected corneal grafts generally show progressive scarring and often require penetrating keratoplasty. We present a patient in whom infectious crystalline keratopathy developed 3 months after surgery. The infection was successfully treated with antibiotic therapy.

From inquiry to judgment: age and sex differences in patterns of adult moral thinking and information-seeking.

This research examined age and sex variations in moral judgment processes across the life-span, primarily using objective questionnaire techniques. Both stage level of judgment and patterns of requests for further information following dilemma presentation were studied in 242 respondents, ages fourteen to ninety-two, in order to measure individual differences in judgment orientations hypothesized by Gilligan and suggested by theorists of aging. There were few indications of sex differences in either stage or patterns of information-seeking, except for a generally greater preference for additional information in decision-making by women. With respect to age trends, participants over age seventy-five scored at significantly lower stage levels than younger adult groups. However, elderly adults' judgments did not appear simply "regressed" to earlier developmental levels. On both objective and open-ended measures, older participants seemed more likely than younger groups to assimilate moral dilemma information to their own general cognitive frameworks, consistent with an hypothesis of greater synthesis in judgment among the elderly.

Private medical insurance in New Zealand: issues of membership and growth.

Questions concerning ownership of private medical insurance were included in a recent Department of Statistics' survey of a random sample of almost 7000 New Zealanders. The results indicated that 35% of those surveyed owned private medical insurance and such ownership was significantly related to various social, demographic and health related variables. The findings are discussed in terms of the possibilities for growth of private medical insurance and the implications of such growth for both the public and the private health care sectors.

Two cases of trisomy 12p due to rcpt (12;21)(p11;p11) inherited through three generations.

Two cases of trisomy 12p due to a familial translocation t(12;21) (p11;p11) inherited through three generations are presented. The clinical features of both affected individuals are consistent with those previously reported. Study of the NORs by silver staining showed translocation of the NOR from chromosome 21 onto the der(12) and suggested that the activity of this site has been suppressed in some carriers.

Can impedance characterize the heart?

When considering the use of Fourier series in hemodynamics, the question is whether one can relate the frequency components of the flow oscillations to the corresponding ones of pressure using impedance concepts. For the arteries, this method provided the basis for great advances in understanding. However, it is precisely because the arterial tree acts almost linearly while its properties do not change markedly within one beat that frequency analysis achieved such success. For the ventricle, in which the mechanical properties vary widely over the course of one heart cycle, Fourier analysis loses its usefulness. Consequently, we must return to the time domain for formulating a description of the heart as a pump. A time-domain method, the impulse response, is suggested as a possible alternative to impedance.
