[B-streptococci infection in the newborn (author's transl)].

The authors describe their experiences with the treatment of 3 newborns with meningitis due to B-streptococci,, and give a review of the problems of etiology, clinical symptoms, diagnosis and therapy of infections with B-streptococci in newborns. Furthermore, the article deals withthe frequency of the ocurrence of these bacteria in mothers, children and in the medical personal staff as well as with the possible ways of transmission. The relations between infections with B-streptococci and respiratory distress syndrome in newborns are discussed with the problems of differential diagnosis and therapy.

Cross Infection

[Post-perfusion syndrome in childhood (author's transl)].

Following cardiac surgery with extracorporeal circulation three children became ill with a postperfusion syndrome. Besides typical clinical and haematological findings (fever, hepatosplenomegaly, lymphomonocytosis with "atypical" lymphocytes) demonstration of characteristic antibody sequential titres (IgG and IgM antibodies against cytomegalovirus) was possible. The importance of this syndrome rests in the problems of differential diagnosis which occur at the beginning of clinical symptoms (differentiation from endocarditis, septicaemia, hepatitis).

Antibodies, Viral

[Identification of Mycobacterium rhodochrous as the causative agent of pericarditis in a small child].

In a child aged 2 5/12 years with a suppurating pericarditis mycobacterium rhodochrous was grown from a blood culture and was regarded as the causative organism of the disease. By means of chemotherapy and surgical measures we succeeded in a complete cure of the process without complications. The problems of microbiological diagnostics, particularly of the taxonomic differentiation of these causative organisms as well the therapy of the infections produced by them are discussed.

Child, Preschool

[On a case of purulent pericarditis in a young child caused by mycobacterium rhodochrous].

M. rhodochrous was cultivated from the blood of a 2 1/2 year-old child with purulent pericarditis and is regarded as the causative agent. The process was successfully treated by chemotherapy and surgical measures. The problems of bacteriological diagnostics are discussed in detail with particular reference to the taxonomical differentiation of these agents and the treatment of their infections.
