Clinical experience with infusion cholegraphy using iotroxamide (Biliscopin ) (author's transl).

Forty-three cholangio-cholecystographies were carried out with iotroxamide. A the same time, the behavior of various serum enzymes was controlled. Iotroxamide satisfactorily demonstrated the biliary tract for the diagnosis in 37 of our patients (86.5%). Only an inadequate or incomplete evaluation was possible for 6 of our patients (13.5%). Due to the pharmacokinetic characteristics of iotroximide, the time-density ratio is very favorable. As a result, the contrast radiograph of the biliary tract including the gallbladder was available for evaluation as early as 30 minutes after the infusion and almost always within 60 minutes. Minor subjective side effects were observed in only 4 cases. With the exception of 2 cases with obstructed bile flow, the serum-enzyme level was not significantly altered after administration of the contrast medium.

[Radiation therapy in patients with electronic cardiac pacemakers: interferences with the pacemaker's function by ionizing radiation and other sources of disturbances (author's transl)].

In the course of radiation therapy and connected diagnostical measures ionizing radiation and other sources of disturbance may interfere with the function of permanent pacemakers. The conditions of such hazards are investigated in theory and practice making allowance for the different susceptibility to trouble of various models of permanent pacemakers. It appears that no extension of long-term follow-up of the cardiac pacemaker's function is needed with regard to possible late effects of ionizing radiation, but that the follow-up of pacemaker-patients during their first period of treatment should not be neglected, since other sources of electronic interference may be present. Routine checks as radiotherapy installations should also include possible sources of disturbance to electronic pacemakers.

[Experiences with drug therapy of advanced metastatic carcinoma of the breast (author's transl)].

A group of patients with metastatic breast cancer treated by a distinct drug regimen is analyzed with special respect to clinical and psychological problems. The range of remissions in this study was similar to literature dates. General limitations of indication for cytostatic drugs and of long-time-therapy are discussed. The possible relations of histologic type of primary carcinoma to the efficiency of chemotherapy is mentioned.

[The inherent dynamics of radiological diagnosis and ways of controlling it].

The persistent increase in the number of radiological investigations, which has been going on for several decades, has been called its "inherent dynamics" by Rausch. An analysis of the figures has shown that it is due not only to increasing use on the part of doctors and hospitals, but is particularly the result of an increase in the number of examinations per patient. Suggestions for limiting the increase are discussed, particularly a more stringent control of the indications by the radiologists, prevention of repetitious examinations and avoidance of qualitatively unsatisfactory examinations.

[Bacteriological investigations in radiological clinic (radiographic apparatus, rooms and personnel) (author's transl)].

The importance of X-ray departments as a potential source of infection with hospital organisms was investigated by examining a number of radiographic rooms and comparing these with two private dwellings. It was found that there was a higher incidence of organisms than in private homes, but this was considerably less than on wards. Particularly high numbers of organisms, including pathogenic ones, were found on radiographic apparatus which was inaccessible, and on sponge pillows. Regular disinfection reduced the number of organisms almost to the level of an operating theatre. A visit to the X-ray department does not present a significant risk of infection; nevertheless, hygiene can be markedly improved by appropriate changes in the rooms and by carrying out methods of disinfection.

[Therapy simulator for radiotherapy planning].

The ideas prevailing so far with regard to therapy simulators are represented and the type of the simulator used is described; after that, the range of problems a simulator is applied to, is being analysed more detailedly. The use of the simulator is necessary within two phases of irradiation planning: Firstly, to trace that cross-sectional view of the body which is best adapted to dosage planning along with a preliminary adjustment informing upon the beam directions and the field sizes needed. Secondly, to accomplish the final fixation of the needed beam directions and field sizes inclusively the marking of cutaneous fields, a definitive schedule of doses having been laid down before. The requirements, therapy simulators have to meet according to these considerations, are discussed.

[Double contrast examination of the stomach. Definition, technic and indications].

Double contrast examination constitutes an important element in radiological gastric examination. The author examines the history of the term "double contrast" and defines the designation of "double contrast examination". The exclusive use of the double contrast method reduces the diagnostic value of gastric X-ray examinations. Thus a method is suggested that will avoid the disadvantages of exclusive double contrast examination while adequately including double contrast in the gastric examination. This is done by using various methods - according to the problem posed - in order to achieve the double contrast.
