The effect of trimethorpim-sulfamethoxazole was compared with that of sulfamethoxazole alone in 26 children with urinary tract infection, randomly assigned according to a double-blind procedure to two equally sized groups. TMX-SMX was found to be superior in rendering the urine culture negative for the 3 months after the start of treatment. Also, over 12-month follow-up period there were fewer recurrences in the patients who received TMP-SMX but here the difference between the two groups did not reach statistical significance.
Evaluation in screening of hospitalized patients. Am J Clin Pathol 64: 311-314, 1975. The specificity of the serum gamma-glutamyl transpepidase (GGT) was evaluated by its determination in 1,040 unselected adult inpatients. GGT was elevated in 139 (13.4%) patients, but was only rarely elevated in the absence of elevation of other enzymes in the routine chemistry profile. Of the elevations, 32.4% occurred in patients with primary hepatobiliary disease. An elevated serum GGT is a strong indicator of hepatobiliary dysfunction. However, proper interpretation of a serum GGT elevation requires correlation with clinical data and other tests.
Two patients, a mother and her daughter, are presented who manifest the clinical features of the oro-facial-digital syndrome (OFD I). Many of these features are shared with Mohr's syndrome (OFD II). Confusion arises when a patient presents with features common to both syndromes. The features which are always or sometimes associated with these syndromes are tabulated. The Tables also show which abnormalities are common to both syndromes and to our cases. Additional clinical and radiological features which have not been considered part of these syndromes are described. We present these cases to suggest that these syndromes should be "lumped" together as one syndrome. We propose expanding this syndrome to include ear and renal abnormalities. Our cases follow an X-linked dominant inheritance pattern and, therefore, do not help determine the genetic controversy of these two syndromes.

Serum and urine osmolalities were measured for the first five days of life in healthy fullterm newborns fed from the first day. Values of serum osmolality were found to be lower than in previous studies of newborns and lower than those of children and adults. The early initiation of feeding, the low solute concentration of the formula and the relatively low glomerular filtration rate of newborns may account for these observations. A rise in serum osmolality concurrent with the elaboration of a more dilute urine suggests that maturation of mechanisms involved in water excretion occurs in the first five days of life.
