Laser interferometric prediction of postoperative visual acuity in patients with cataracts.

I used the laser interferometer to test 137 eyes to determine whether preoperative interference visual acuity tests could accurately predict postoperative Snellen visual acuities. In 60 patients with immature cataracts and normal maculas the postoperative Snellen visual acuity was predictable within one line in 53 patients and within two lines in seven others. In 29 other patients with cataracts and senile macular scars or macular degeneration without subretinal fluid postoperative Snellen visual acuity was predictable within one line in 26 patients and within two lines in two others. Several easily recognizable clinical conditions make the interferometer test unreliable. Those that produce false-positive responses are serous detachment of the sensory epithelium of the macula, cystoid macular edema, visual fields cut through fixation, amblyopia, macular holes or cysts, geographic atrophy of the pigment epithelium of the macula, and early postoperative retinal detachment. Those that produce false-negative responses are mature cataracts and testing without pupillary dilatation.

Predicting acuities in capsulotomy patients: interferometers and potential acuity meter.

Using the Lotmar moiré fringe interferometer and the potential acuity meter, I predicted the postoperative Snellen visual acuities in 30 implanted eyes that required secondary capsulotomies. The Lotmar interferometer was within one line of the postoperative visual acuity in 29 eyes (96.6%); the potential acuity meter prediction was within one line in 10 eyes (33.3%). An earlier study defined seven clinical conditions that produced false positive results with the laser interferometer. The same results occurred with the Lotmar interferometer. When the potential acuity meter was used, six of the seven conditions produced false positive results.

Laser interferometry as a prognostic tool in pseudophakic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

A group of patients have been studied whose retinas had been surgically reattached. The early macular function as measured by the laser interferometer is usually better than the Snellen visual acuity, and corresponds with the final Snellen visual acuity obtained in six to twelve months after surgery. A reasonable theory is proposed to explain this Snellen acuity-retinal acuity disparity.

Specific modulation of brain stimulation reward by haloperidol.

Low doses of haloperidol (3--18 micrograms/kg) caused dose related increases in reinforcing thresholds for self-stimulation to the medial forebrain bundle in rats. These effects, which were demonstrated completely independent of performance variables, indicate a direct modulation of central reinforcement processes by this drug, at doses which have highly selective action on dopaminergic neurotransmission.

Circadian variations in behavioral and biological sensitivity to ethanol.

In rats, behavioral (startle response and motor activity) and physiological (plasma corticosterone, nonesterified fatty acids, blood ethanol levels, liver alcohol and aldehyde dehydrogenase activity, and body temperature) responses to ethanol were measured over the 24-hr cycle. The response to ethanol for many of these measures showed circadian variations. Both stimulatory and inhibitory effects of ethanol were observed for several dependent variables at the same time, relative to controls. These results suggest that many discrepancies in the ethanol literature may be due to a light cycle X dependent variable interaction.
