With proper conversion factors, light meters designed for photographic use may be used to measure clinical light levels. Conversion factors and use of these light meters are discussed.
1 Comparison of the effects of sulphated polysaccharides on thrombin-induced clotting of normal and antithrombin III-deficient plasmas suggests the involvement of antithrombin III (AT III) in the anticoagulant activities of cellulose, dextran and xylan sulphates. 2 AT III appears to play little or no role in the anticoagulant activity of carrageenans.
1 Cellulose sulphate, like heparin, prolonged the clotting time in partial thromboplastin time (PTT) assays, inhibited the amidolytic activity of thrombin, was without effect on amidolysis catalysed by activated coagulation factor X(Xa), and potentiated the inhibition of both thrombin and Xa by antithrombin III (AT). 2 The anticoagulant activity of cellulose sulphate in PTT assays was, like that of heparin and heparin sulphate, but unlike that of dermatan sulphate, reduced by prior incubation of plasma with antiserum specific for AT. 3 These results, which suggest that the anticoagulant activity of cellulose sulphate is at least partially mediated through AT, are discussed in terms of the structural features of polysaccharides required for AT activation.

Analysis of an optical system that contains a combination of reflecting and refracting elements may be very cumbersome by conventional vergence methods, especially if the system contains a large number of elements. This paper presents an algorithm that permits simple and rapid analysis of the paraxial optics of such systems and presents examples of optometric interest.
Although it is well known that topically administered steroids can increase intraocular pressure systemically administered steroids are much less frequently implicated in episodes of ocular hypertension. In the case reported, a marked increase in intraocular pressure was apparently caused by seroids used in treating poison ivy dermatitis. Pressures returned to normal shortly after the drug was withdrawn.
A matrix approach to decentration problems is presented which reduces the common decentration problems of ophthalmic optics to simple matrix multiplications. The formalism also leads to an alternative derivation of Thomson's formulas for obliquely crossed spherocylindrical lenses.
Motion of the speckle pattern observed by an ametrope viewing laser light reflected from a rotating cylinder with a matte surface is discussed. Mathematical expressions are derived for the apparent speed and direction (angular velocity) of the pattern when spherical neutralizing lenses are put in place and conditions for an endpoint appropriate for meridional refraction are discussed.
