Pulsed subcutaneous electrical stimulation in spinal cord injury: preliminary results.

The treatment of long-term, stable para- and quadriplegics with pulsed electrical stimulation for pain control resulted in, anecdotally, a significant number of these individuals showing increased motor function as well as sensory awareness. This small pilot study was conducted in order to assess the hypothesis that pulsed electrical fields can effect diseased neurological function. Thirteen para- and quadriplegic subjects with 18 months of stable neurological signs and symptoms were exposed daily to pulsed electrical stimulation for a 6-month period and assessed for any improvement in motor function or sensory perception. The hypothesis is that pulsed electromagnetic fields can normalize viable but dysfunctional neuronal structures. Results were encouraging.

Metaphysis in Perthes disease: a method of assessment and selection for treatment.

Following the study of metaphyseal changes of Perthes disease in 100 children (126 hips), a method of selection for containment or weight-bearing was evolved by measuring, on standard anteroposterior radiographs, metaphyseal expansion and correlating this with metaphyseal decalcification. Lateral cortical decalcification of the metaphysis indicates a vulnerable hip, which must be contained until the lesion has recalcified; otherwise, weight-bearing will not affect the result. Seventy hips have been managed by this method. Sixteen were treated by containment for greater than or equal to 20 weeks. Ten were untreated. The four poor results were associated with weight-bearing when the hip was vulnerable.

Elevation of serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol by rowachol, a proprietary mixture of six pure monoterpenes.

Rowachol, a proprietary choleretic containing 6 pure monoterpenes markedly elevates serum HDL cholesterol (SHDL-C) concentrations in man. The concentration of SHDL-C showed a progressive increase in 16 patients treated with 6-9 capsules of Rowachol daily for periods of 2-28 weeks. There was no accompanying significant change in the concentrations of serum total cholesterol or triglyceride. In view of the significant inverse relationship between SHDL-C concentration and the risk of developing ischaemic heart disease, it is suggested that Rowachol and possibly other terpenes merit further investigation as possible therapeutic agents in the prevention and treatment of atheroma.
