Cerebrovascular Disorders

A method to express complex curves concisely and with high fidelity.

Piecewise spline interpolation between judiciously selected points on a curve reproduces it with great precision. A number of points much smaller than in current digitization techniques is needed and their positions fully characterize a curve. We present the rules to select the nodal points and we demonstrate that their positions are very sensitive to changes in wave form. They can therefore be used to identify a curve in parts or in its entirety, to provide its mathematical definition.

The liquid barrier filter: total protection against particulate contaminants.

The design, construction, and operation of a new type of filter that eliminates particulate contaminants from a current of gas is described. It has a yield higher than that of any conventional filter or filtration system. It is believed that a liquid barrier filter provides the best possible protection in all cases where not even a small number of toxic particulates can be tolerated in an atmosphere.

Air Pollution

The liquid barrier filter--a new concept to eliminate particulate contaminants from gases.

We have explored the possibility of using a continuous liquid phase of high gas permeability as a filter to remove particulate contaminants from a gas stream. The liquid, a non-toxic perfluorocarbon, severs upstream and downstream gas phases completely. It can dissolve great quantities of gases and pass them, by diffusion, along even a slight partial pressure gradient. The liquid phase remains intact in the process: there is no convective transfer of gas. Particulate contaminants will, on impact with the continuous liquid phase, lose their momentum and be stopped; our results promise near ideal efficacy of capture. We suggest that filters based on this principle be developed to protect against highly toxic particulate contaminants in an atmosphere.

[Phospholipids of pulmonary surfactants and lung elasticity].

We discuss the various preparations of substitute pulmonary surfactant that have been proposed for the treatment of Respiratory Distress Syndrome in premature infants. We than submit some experimental results demonstrating that a preparation of phospholipids in an organic solvent can simulate the behavior of the naturally occurring pulmonary surfactant as a monolayer at an air-water interface.

An endoscopic carrier with complete directional control: design principles.

We describe a carrier for instruments used in endoscopy. It consists of a train of articulated segments whose angular displacement is controlled by a series of magnetic clutches. The operator guides the leading segment under view from the carrier's proximal end, and the guide angle is repeated automatically at the articulations of all following segments. This mechanism is used to lead the entire length of the carrier around curves or flexures. A central channel accepts instruments for observation and manipulation. We believe that endoscopic examinations particularly of the upper and the lower digestive tracts will become much easier to perform with this new endoscopic sonde.
