The new management team.

There is no better place to instill the necessary sense of cooperation and collaboration than the top. If top management, both physician and nonphysician, can establish a suitable working relationship, and communicate both the necessity for and success of the relationship throughout the organization, breakdowns in cooperation and collaboration are far less likely to occur. Shared responsibility and decision-making at the upper levels can be a laboratory for their use in other organizational locations. The partnership between clinical and administrative leadership is more important now than ever before. Medical group practices are an ideal setting for testing a new form of shared management that will help to rid organizations of the confrontational and adversarial attitudes that have too long characterized relationships among managers and clinicians in our health care organizations and institutions.

Health care system under AIDS siege.

Although the exact impact of AIDS on the health care delivery system is unknown, the evidence to date supports some grim predictions. Hundreds of thousands of victims can be expected, with costs of care reaching the multi-billions. Providers need to prepare now for what is apt to be a serious financial, organizational, and emotional problem.

Survey shows medical involvement in risk management.

Late in 1985, an AAMD InterCOM survey questionnaire was sent to hospital-based members of the Academy. The subject of the survey was risk management programs, and the goal was to obtain information on how members planned and implemented this function within their institutions. Of the 632 surveys mailed, 192 usable responses were returned. Where two or more responses were received from the same institution, the combined response was used. If the responses were incompatible, the institution was deleted from the returns. In this article, we summarize the major findings of the survey.

Academy begins search for operational model.

Very much in vogue these days is discussion of the tensions between quality and costs in the delivery of health care services. A recurring problem, however, is the absence of any clear definition of exactly how quality and cost are interrelated. The beginnings of a model for that definition were presented at one of the courses at this year's National Institute on Health Care Leadership and Management in Point Clear, Ala.

Certification: goals set, goals met.

When the American Board of Medical Management was founded by the American College of Physician Executives on January 1, 1989, it was understood that the process for formal recognition of medical management as a specialty of medicine would be rigorous. Understandably, particularly at a time when the medical profession and the health care delivery system are under increasing scrutiny by all third-party payers, the decision to expand medical specialization is made with great caution. But the process of recognition for medical management is now well under way. In an interview with Frank A. Riddick Jr., MD, FACPE, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ABMM, Physician Executive learned more about the specific goals of ABMM and about the degree to which those goals have been achieved.
