Reversible C(6)F(5) transfer takes place between the boron centers in the anion formed by methide abstraction from [MeZr{N(SiMe(3))(2)}(3)] or [Cp(2)ZrMe(2)] (L(n)M-CH(3) in the reaction scheme) by the perfluorinated diborane 1. The solution chemistry of the metallocenium ion pairs formed from 1 and [Cp(2)ZrMe(2)] is correlated with the observed ethylene polymerization behavior of 1 in comparison to the monoborane B(C(6)F(5))(3), the related diborane 1,2-C(6)H(4)[B(C(6)F(5))(2)](2), and the 9,10-diboraanthracene compound 9,10-(C(6)F(5))(2)C(12)B(2)F(8).

The First Molecular Main Group Metal Species Containing Interstitial Hydride.

Lithium cages containing hydride: The reaction of tBuLi with Me(2)AlN(2-Pyr)Ph in toluene gave [Li(8)(H){N(2-Pyr)Ph}(6)](+)[Li(Me(2)AltBu(2))(2)](-), whose cation is the first molecular main group metal species to contain interstitial hydride (the cluster core is shown in the picture). Treatment of the reaction mixture with THF gave the neutral hydride Li(7)(H)[N(2-Pyr)Ph](6), which has a capped octahedral (Li(+))(7) cluster core. 2-Pyr=2-pyridyl.

A New High-Flux Chemical and Materials Crystallography Station at the SRS Daresbury. 1. Design, Construction and Test Results.

A new single-crystal diffraction facility has been constructed on beamline 9 of the SRS at Daresbury Laboratory for the study of structural problems in chemistry and materials science. The station utilizes up to 3.8 mrad horizontally from the 5 T wiggler magnet which can be focused horizontally and vertically. The horizontal focusing is provided by a choice of gallium-cooled triangular bent Si (111) or Si (220) monochromators, giving a wavelength range from 0.3 to 1.5 A. Focusing in the vertical plane is achieved by a cylindrically bent zerodur mirror with a 300 mum-thick palladium coating. The station is equipped with a modified Enraf-Nonius CAD-4 four-circle diffractometer and a Siemens SMART CCD area-detector system. High- and low-temperature facilities are available to cover the temperature range from about 80 to 1000 K. Early results on test compounds without optimization of the beam optics demonstrate that excellent refined structures can be obtained from samples giving diffraction patterns too weak to be measured with conventional laboratory X-ray sources, fulfilling a major objective of the project.

The structure of acetomycin. Spectroscopic characterization and X-ray analysis of a bromo derivative.

Acetomycin (1a), known since 1958, has been further characterized by NMR and CD spectra. The 3-acetyl side chain of 1a is reduced selectively by sodium cyanoborohydride yielding the diastereomeric alcohols 2a and 3a, which were esterified to the crystalline bromoacetates 2c and 3c. The structure and absolute configuration of 3c was determined by X-ray analysis. From these data the absolute configuration of 1a followed as 3S, 4S, 5R.
