Phagocytosis of cadmium microcrystals by glass-adherent peripheral blood leucocytes of newborns with various perinatal risks.

Using cadmium microcrystals saturated with human serum albumin as particles for the phagocytic assay, the phagocytic activity of peripheral blood glass-adherent leucocytes of 32 preterm infants, 15 small-for-date newborns, 14 term newborns with perinatal asphyxia and 27 term newborns of diabetic mothers was compared with healthy term newborns and normal adults. A statistically significant increase in both the percent of phagocytosing cells and in the mean number of engulfed particles per cell was found in all groups of "stressed" infants as compared with cells of adults. No difference in the proportion of actively phagocytosing cells was found between term healthy and stressed neonates; as regards the mean number of ingested particles per cell, a slight increase (however, statistically not significant) was found in all groups of infants with perinatal risks compared with normal infants suggesting a temporary stimulation of these cells.

[Recommendations for the diagnosis and therapy of bacterial infections in premature and newborn infants].

In a survey the authors present the most important facts of diagnostic and therapy of bacterial infections in term and preterm neonates. It is a synthesis of an extensive study of the literature and of own experiences. Besides microbiological diagnostic and antibacterial chemotherapy one can find also suggestions concerning hematological and chemical diagnostic methods as well as of parenteral and oral nutrition and immunotherapy.

[B streptococcal infections in the neonatal period and infancy].

From January 1975 to March 1985 37 newborns and infants with B streptococcal infections were treated in the Pediatric Hospital of the Karl Marx University in Leipzig. The percentage of B streptococcal infections of all neonatal bacterial infections rose in this time from 6.9% to 15.7%. There were 23 early onset type infections and 14 late infections; 12 of the 37 infants died. Septicemia and meningitis were the most important clinical features. The time of beginning of the clinical symptoms in the postnatal period and the results of serotyping suggest a connatal infection in most cases.

[Mycoplasma etiology of acute pancreatitis].

In a 10 year-old girl the clinical and laboratory findings led to the diagnosis of pancreatitis. At the same time an infection by mycoplasma pneumoniae was serologically stated. Since there could not be found another cause for pancreatitis, a relation between pancreatitis and infection by mycoplasms is very probable.

Studies by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and distance geometry of the solution conformation of the alpha-amylase inhibitor tendamistat.

This is a preliminary report on the determination of the solution conformation of the alpha-amylase inhibitor Tendamistat by nuclear magnetic resonance and distance geometry calculations. A characterization is given of the complete polypeptide backbone fold and the side-chains of the presumed active site in this protein. These results are based on complete sequence-specific resonance assignments, a list of 401 distance constraints from nuclear Overhauser effects, 168 distance constraints from hydrogen bonds and disulphide bridges, and 50 torsion angle constraints from measurements of spin-spin coupling constants.

Polypeptide fold in the two metal clusters of metallothionein-2 by nuclear magnetic resonance in solution.

The solution conformation of rabbit liver Cd27+-metallothionein-2 was determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) and distance geometry. The n.m.r. data are based on complete sequence-specific resonance assignments for the polypeptide chain. This letter describes the global arrangement of the polypeptide chain, which forms two distinct domains containing metal clusters of three and four Cd ions, respectively.
