[Investigations of carbromal metabolism (author's transl)].

Erythro-2-Brom-2-ethyl-3-hydroxybutyramide has been isolated from the urines of patients with Carbromal intoxications as well as from the urine of rat, mouse and dog treated with either Carbromal or with 2-Brom-2-ethyl-acetamide. The identification of the excreted and synthetized metabolite was carried out by means of IR, Mass and NMR spectroscopy. Along with the erythro-2-Brom-2-ethyl-3-hydroxybutyramide one other bromine containing compound was isolated after Carbromal application only, its mass spectrum and rel. RF values having the same characteristics as the synthetized erythro-2-Brom-2-ethyl-3-hydroxybutyrylcarbamide. However, the purification of this metabolite so far has not been successful.

[Generalized mycoses and their therapy].

After valuation of the increasing significance of the medical mycology as an interdisciplinary branch of science which concerns all clinicians the causes for the permanent increase of the endomycoses by yeasts and moulds are demonstrated. As secondary mycoses they need predisposing factors for manifestation which are to be taken into consideration more than up to now done in so-called risk patients. The pathomechanism is demonstrated with the help of the frequency of the lesion of organic systems in candidoses as well as in mould mycoses. Finally, the modern therapeutic possibilities are discussed.

[New aspects on the treatment of pneumonia associated with acute mycoplasma infections (author's transl)].

Over a period of 16 months acute mycoplasma pneumonia was diagnosed in 20 patients. All were rapidly and completely cured by ampicillin and cephalosporins, which are ineffective against mycoplasma, indicating that acute mycoplasma infection in children does not require selective treatment, the pneumonia probably being caused by other micro-organisms. There is no prove that mycoplasma pneumonia heals spontaneously, without any therapy.

[The issue of professional discretion for pathologists (author's transl)].

According to German law the physician shall not disclose secrets that were confided or made known to him. The definition reads: physician is who practises the healing art (including medicine and surgery). When considering this definition part of the jurisprudence is of the opinion, therefore, that subject of such healing is exclusively the living human being and the pathologist acting as post-mortem examiner makes solely statements concerning the dead body and thus is not to be considered as physician. This opinion does not do justice to the real tasks of the pathologist. The basic idea of the tasks of the pathologist is the consultation and assistance of the physician practising the healing art. Hence the post- mortem examinations serve indirectly as healing treatment. Consequently the pathologist acts as physician and is bound to professional discretion. The result corresponds with the law enforce according to which secrets are subject to protection beyond death.

Antibody-producing cells: virus-induced alteration of response to antigen.

Spleen antibody-forming cells of mice yield a 3- to 10-fold increase in their response to sheep erythrocyte antigen if they are acutely infected by lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus. This early stimulation is replaced by a long-term inhibition of the antibody-forming cells as the viremia goes into its persisting chronic stage. These contrasting immunological phenomena are examined as contributing factors responsible for the enhancement by this virus of asparaginase (EC 3.5.1.1; L-asparagine amidolydrolase) therapy against leukemia in mice, and for the alteration of the susceptibility of mice to various neoplastic processes.
