[The effect of various diphosphonate compounds on macro- and micromorphologic details of golden hamster incisors].

Five different diphosphonates have been parenterally applied to Syrian golden hamsters. Microscopic-metric and histological examinations revealed changes in size and structure in the incisors of those experimental animals which had received n-butylaminomethane diphosphonate. It is warned against the uncontrolled use of the tested diphosphonates for stomatological purposes.

[Secondary caries].

On the basis of a survey of the literature, the author emphasizes the considerable clinical importance of secondary caries and the dependence of its incidence upon the filling material used. Further predisposing factors (such as marginal leakage, cavity preparation, age and size of the filling, and the kind of cavity wall working) are discussed, and relevant measures for the prevention of secondary caries are presented.

[Phosphonates and their importance for dental practice].

In the light of a literature review, the author deals with the significance of anorganic pyrophosphate in the mineralization process in the organism. Diphosphonates are synthetic substances which act on mineralisation. The author made experiments with them, the results of which might be of importance in the stomatological sphere with regard to caries reduction and plaque inhibition.

[Concerning the reversibility of initial carious lesions in the fissure region (author's transl)].

Using a light microscope, the authors compared longitudinal ground sections of human premolars from a region where the drinking water contains 1,0 p.p.m. of fluorine with the preparations from a region where the drinking water contains 0.35 p.p.m. of fluorine. Under the microscope, "healty" teeth may also show initial carious lesions in the fissure region. These changes are significantly less frequent in premolars which developed under the influence of fluorine. This finding and an age-depending decrease of the initial carious lesions in the fissures militate in favour of the reversibility of these changes.

[Technological and clinical studies on various plastic filling materials].

The authors determined the hardness, water absorption and thermal expansion of different composites. The clinical trial of two of these materials is followed by conclusions as to their use in practice. With regard to the anterior region, the composites are in a sense an enrichment of assortment of filling materials. But due to their still insufficient physico-chemical properties, they are no alternative of cast or amalgam fillings.

[The diagnosis of initial carious changes].

On the basis of radiological studies on extracted teeth and of microscopic examinations of longitudinal ground sections it is stated that the early stages of dental caries are very difficult to diagnosticate clinically. Under the microscope, "healthy" teeth may also show initial carious lesions in the fissure region. The greater frequency of these changes (which might be considered to be premorbid conditions) in teeth with narrow fissures was not significant. For various reasons discussed in the present paper, it can be assumed that teeth with large fissures are earlier and more frequently prone to carious lesions.

[Comparative radiological studies on the incidence of primary caries in treated vital and devitalized teeth].

The non-filled proximal areas of 709 vital and devital teeth with metal fillings were examined radiologically for primary caries. The findings were almost identical (Table 2). The somewhat higher prevalence of primary caries in vital teeth (Table 1) may be explained by the more drastic removal of predilection sites in devital teeth, which is due to the necessarily more extended cavity preparation.
