[Results of female breast diagnostics (author's transl)].

A retrospective 2-years' study conducted in 3,563 patients showed that triple diagnostics involving clinic, mammography and puncture cytology occupies a central position in the diagnostics of the female breast, whereas plate thermography represents an additional method to clarify unclear clinical or mammographic findings. 88.9% of tumours were detected by means of a careful clinical examination. Over and above this, mammography enables identification of the occult carcinoma, which is extirpated in a controlled manner by means of preparation radiography. Puncture and cytology enable a nonsurgical clarification and treatment of cysts and are, therefore, an important control indicator of mastopathically changed mammae.

[Lipase and carboxypeptidase A in human serum: no correlation (author's transl)].

The catalytic concentrations of lipase and carboxypeptidase A in sera of patients with and without pancreatic diseases show no correlation. 40 sera out of 44 with elevated values for lipase, derived from a collective of 135 different sera, showed no increase in the catalytic concentrations of carboxypeptidase A. The demanding titrimetric determination of lipase cannot be replaced by the more simple colorimetric determination of carboxypeptidase A for the laboratory diagnosis of pancreatic diseases.

Drug interference in clinical chemistry: studies on ascorbic acid.

The expert group "Drug Interference in Clinical Chemistry" of the Bureau of Reference, Directorate General for Research, Science and Education of the Commission of the European Communities, consisting of one participant of each member of the European Communities, presents this first report on the final results of its activities. Within the framework of a first stage basic program, the paper describes interferences of therapeutic and elevated doses of ascorbic acid on commonly used clinical chemical methods. This is the result of a bipartite study that was jointly planned, carried out and evaluated. Local and personal influences have been eliminated, as have variations due to methodology, measurement equipment and reagents, in order to be able to present distinct causal effects of ascorbic acid. No definite influence of ascorbic acid on analytical values for urea, cholesterol, calcium, protein, bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase could be detected. At therapeutic concentrations, ascorbic acid distinctly interferes with the analysis of glucose, uric acid, creatinine and inorganic phosphate. The extent and direction of interferences vary, depending on the type of reaction, kit and apparatus. In some cases the influence of ascorbic acid results in severe disturbance of the analytical methods leading to useless values.

[Simplified titrimetric semimicrodetermination of lipase in serum (author's transl)].

The quantitative, titrimetric and kinetic method for the determination of lipase in serum, duodenal juice and punctures by Rick (Rick, W. (1969), this journal 7,530-539) has been adapted as a routine semimicro-method using 0.20 ml volume of spcimen without N2 protection. The description of the procedure and quality control data are reported. The method has been checked for more than 3 years and sera from more than 3000 patients have been investigated.

[Lysosomal proteinasen and peptidasen in serum of children with inflammatory diseases (author's transl)].

In the serum of 43 children the activities of proteinases and peptidases by mean of 41 substrates have been determined in order to get knowledge of overall activities and differentiation of lysosomal proteolytic enzymes. Proteinases, cathepsins A, B, C and D, aminopeptidases, carboxypeptidases, dipeptidases, tripeptidases and aminoacidarylamidases have been checked. The enzyme pattern of the serum of a collective of 15 healthy children or those without serious clinical signs is demonstrated, also the alterations and differentiations in the serum of children with leucemia, pneumonia, inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract, other inflammatory diseases and common diseases. Leucyl-glycyl-glycyltripeptidase, glycyl-glycyl-glycyltripeptidase, a proteosterase, carboxypeptidase A, a neutrale proteinase and basic proteinase (cathepsin B) and cathepsin C are increased. A distinct elevation has been found only in children with leucemia and pneumonia.
