Acute arsenic exposure treated with oral D-penicillamine.

Arsenic trioxide (As2O3) is the arsenic compound most commonly implicated in acute toxic exposures. The toxicity of As2O3 is a function of the preparation's particle size and solubility. A 16-month-old female presented at a local emergency room with a history of acute ingestion of As2O3 obtained from a commonly available pesticide. Classic gastrointestinal symptoms of arsenic toxicity were exhibited shortly after ingestion; however, aggressive decontamination followed by early chelation therapy resulted in the cessation of toxic manifestations and an uneventful recovery. Oral chelation therapy with D-penicillamine has rarely been reported as an effective agent in the treatment of arsenic poisoning. The case reported herein is further documentation that D-penicillamine is effective in increasing the mobilization of arsenic. The authors also recommend that products containing arsenic compounds should not be used where children may come in contact with them until the Environmental Protection Agency's child resistant packaging regulations become effective.

Swine vesicular disease in Great Britain.

The State Veterinary Service in Great Britain has encountered considerable difficulty in eradicating SVD. For the last four years confirmed outbreaks have been mainly confined to one region, linked directly to outbreaks in that region, or have occurred as isolated cases related to the feeding of swill. The surveillance effort to locate subclinical disease has far surpassed that of any other country. There is no doubt that the introduction of SVD into any country which adopts a stamping-out policy for FMD and does not vaccinate, could present similar problems to those experienced by Great Britain.

Nocardia species as a possible cause of ovine abortion.

An instance of ovine abortion is described in which focal placental lesions were caused by a Gram-positive branching filamentous organism. The organism was present in well oxygenated tissues and so is thought more likely to have been a Nocardia sp than an Actinomyces sp.

In vivo cytogenetic activity of sulphonylurea drugs in man.

A cytogenetic investigation of diabetic patients undergoing treatment with sulphonylurea drugs, particularly chlorpropamide, shows that significantly more chromatid aberrations and chromosome exchange aberrations are present in the lymphocytes of these patients compared with controls. This is taken as evidence of possible mutagenic activity by these drugs, although the possibility cannot be ruled out that the diabetic state itself is a contributory factor.

Evaluation of the Clinicard sulfobromphthalein procedure.

As each new procedure has been developed by Harleco for the Instrumentation Laboratory, Inc. Clinicard Analyzer 368 instrument, the chemistry department at Americus and Sumter County Hospital has carefully evaluated the procedure and stistically compared it against the existing proceudre before the changeover was made. We have had excellent results with all but one of these procedures. This paper contains the results and the methods of statistical analysis used to compare the new sulfobromphthalein (SBP) procedure with our existing procedure. We found that the omission of a pre-injection specimen from the procedure to be used as a blank made a significant difference in results.

Samonellosis and meat hygiene: red meat.

The association between salmonellosis in man and the infection in food animals has been clearly established. There is, moreover, little doubt that abattoir by-products, effluent and solid waste may allow the recycling of infection in animals. The potential hazard posed by salmonellosis to human and animal health will be reduced only by a greater control over the slaughter of infected farm livestock, improved isolation and casualty slaughter accommodation, a stricter control of slaughterhouse hygiene and the provision and full utilisation of adequate laboratory facilities for the bacteriological examination of meat and the abattoir environment.
