The chondroid syringoma: report of a case arising from the external auditory canal.

Chondroid syringoma is an uncommon, benign skin adnexal tumour. It usually presents as a slowly growing intradermal or subcutaneous nodule on the face. Treatment involves local excision with a cuff of normal tissue to prevent recurrence. A rare case of chondroid syringoma arising from the external auditory canal is reported. The clinical features, histology, treatment and follow-up are discussed.

New surgical adjuncts in the treatment of rhinophyma: the microdebrider and FloSeal.

Rhinophyma is considered to be the final stage of rosacea and has an unknown aetiology. We present two new surgical adjuncts for the treatment of this condition. The microdebrider is easy to use and allows precise contouring of the nose. It shares the same underlying principle as free-hand scalpel shaving but outperforms this method in key areas. We also describe a novel use for FloSeal((R)), a gelatin-thrombin co-mixture, utilizing its haemostatic properties to address bleeding from the re-shaped denuded nose.

Isolated unilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy after minor head trauma.

Isolated unilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy after fracture of the occipital condyle is rare. It usually occurs after major trauma, such as high-speed deceleration injuries following road traffic accidents. We describe a case that resulted from minor trauma. An underlying skull base malformation may have been a predisposing factor.
