Scanning electron microscopy of Sarcocystis fusiformis from the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis).

Scanning electron microscopy of Sarcocystis fusiformis from the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) reveals the presence of two cyst walls and distinct compartments within the cyst. Merozoites lie in large numbers in each compartment and in some cases are covered by a membrane-like exudate. Each merozoite has a micropore situated in the anterior half and ridge-like structures originate from the conoidal end and pass backwards along the body of the parasite.

Scanning electron microscopy of the penetration of newborn mouse skin by Strongyloides ratti and Ancylostoma caninum larvae.

The scanning electron microscopical appearances of infective larvae of Strongyloides ratti and Ancylostoma caninum have been described. Particularly noteworthy was the tail of S. ratti which was found to have a distal aperture surrounded by a row of eight projections. The penetration of larvae through newborn mouse skin was investigated. S. ratti larvae forced its way rapidly and directly through the stratum corneum. No larvae of A. caninum were observed in stages of partial penetration but the occasional empty sheath was seen.

Intestinal nematodes of man.

An account of the life cycle and morbidity of the commoner intestinal nematodes is given and methods of control and eradication discussed.

Light and electron microscopic observations of the life cycle of Sarcocystis orientalis sp. n. in the rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the Malaysian reticulated python (Python reticulatus).

A light and electron microscopic study of Sarcocystis orientalis sp. n. was made. The life cycle of this parasite is in two hosts. Gametogony is in the intestinal epithelial cells of a predator, Python reticulatus. Isospora-like oocysts developed. Sporocysts average 9.1 by 7.7 mum. Rats (Rattus norvegicus) were infected with sporocysts and asexual stages developed. Ten days after infection large zoites (average 7.85 by 2.48 mum) were observed free in peripheral blood and within white blood cells. Small schizonts producing merozoites 2-3 mum long were seen in lung tissue. Tissue cysts developed in skeletal muscle and produced numerous cystozoites (average 5.53 by 1.38 mum). Fine structure was similar to previously described Sarcocystis spp.
