[The ciliated epithelium in the efferent ducts of the submandibular gland].

The examination of 442 bioptic and necroptic submandibular salivary glands revealed that in cases of chronic inflamation of the gland (125 cases) the epithelial lining of its ducts contained ciliated colummar epithelium in 57% of cases. The finding of ciliated epithelium was associated with lithiasis of the gland in nearly 79% of cases. Normal submandibular glands or glands affected with pathological conditions other than chronic inflammation did not contain ciliated epithelium. The present paper is the first one in the literature purposedly dealing with the presence of ciliated epithelium within the ducts of the submandibular gland.

[Malignant nesidioma with 2 types of secretory granules in tumor cells].

A case has been described of a male aged 38 with a malignant nesidioma. The clinical examination disclosed marked hepatomegaly, variable hypertension associated with cool sweating, agitation and transient hyperglycaemia. The primary tumour as well as the metastases in the liver weighing over 13 kg were histologically of trabecular structure and stained positively with the methods of Bodian and grimelius. The impregnation for D-cells according to Rohoznická and Vortel was positive in isolated cells only. Ultrastructurally, the tumor cells could be divided in two types. The more numerous Type I cells contained rather small secretory granules morphologically resembling A granules of islet cells, and staining positively with impregnation methods for A-cells on the ultrastructural level. Type II cells contained, in addition to the formerly described ones, another type of granules appearing as large, slightly osmiophilic ones characteristic of the D-cells of Langerhan's islets and positive with the impregnation methods for D-cells. The type II tumour cells must be therefore regarded as a mixed cell type containing two types of secretory granules.

[Mesothelioma of the septum interatriale (author's transl)].

Sudden death of a 21-year-old women. The cause of death was mesothelioma situated in the region of the interatrial septum that has been manifested since childhood as a complete heart block. Neither gravidity nor delivery led to the aggravation of her state of health. The cause of this heart lesion, which was the mentioned rare tumor, was discovered only during the autopsy.

[Syphilitic lymphadenitis].

The authors subjected to histological examination a total of 38 inguinal lymph nodes from 35 patients. In 34 instances recent acquired syphilis was involved in one instance tertiary syphilis. The disease was in all patients confirmed by clinical examination, by evidence of Treponema pallidum in the luetic ulcer of the primary stage or in condylomas of the secondary stage and on serological examination by a positive BWR in blood or a positive TPI test. In three instances the histological finding in the lymph node was originally erroneously interpreted as a haemoblastoma. In two other patients the histological finding in the lymph nodes drew attention to syphilis, which before has escaped clinical diagnosis. The histological picture of syphilitic lymphadenitis in the early stage of the disease is characterized by perilymhadenitis, hyperplasia of the germ centres, proliferation of reticular cells and plasma cells and often also eosinophil cells. The finding of specific structures is rare. Vasculitis is always present. In half the patients by Warthin-Starry's method treponemas were detected.

[Importance of moulds in the morphogenesis of pulmonary changes in chronic infantile granulomatosis].

A brief clinical and a rather detailed histological decription is given of three male siblings suffering from chronic granulomatosis. Two types of granulomas were indentified. One of them occurring extrapulmonally resembled the specific tuberculous granuloma with caseation, but tuberculous bacilli not demonstrated. The other type of granuloma was found in the lungs and was composed of a leucocytic core surrounded by an epithelioid cellular rim containing giant cells. In all the three cases such granulomas were shown to contain mould filaments of the aspergillus type.

[Histopathological picture of acute disseminated intravascular coagulation].

The paper deals with histological analysis of 72 cases characterized by the finding of capillary microthromboses characteristic of acute disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). It has been stressed that, in addition to the usual fibrillary fibrin deposits, DIC is also characterized by the occurrence of globular fibrin formations, most frequently found within the hepatic and hypophyseal sinusoids. In the present series, microthromboses were obviously more frequent within the capillaries of organs such as the renal glomeruli or plexus chorioideus, wherein significant amounts of water are lost from circulating blood.
