The condition severity was expressed by an index of clinical condition (ICC)-a score (three-point system) used for the assessment of syndrome therapy techniques for the correction of damages in five vital systems (respiration, circulation, metabolism, hemostasis, liver-kidneys). The assessment was performed 24 h after the patient was admitted into an intensive care unit. Depending on the ICC value and the potential lethal outcome the patients were entered into 4 groups. The method was tested on 347 children in three major children's hospitals in Byelorussia. The data obtained make it possible to assess objectively the work in intensive care units and analyse hospital lethality. The method suggested is adjusted for children and is simple in practical application.
The diagnostic potentialities of magnetic-resonance (MR) tomography have been studied in examinations of 45 patients. Primary and secondary tumors of the orbit have been revealed in 15, endocrine ophthalmopathy in 19, injuries of the orbit in 11 patients. The major tomographic signs of these conditions in the axial, frontal, and sagittal projections are described. The results evidence that MR tomography is a highly informative noninvasive method whose principal advantages are the absence of ionizing radiation and the possibility of examination directly in 3 mutually perpendicular projections. MR tomography permits imaging the soft-tissue structures and assessing the anatomic and topographic status of the orbit and the adjacent areas.

The upper limit of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell wall permeability is such that only molecules with a mass not greater than 2-3 kDa can pass across the cell wall. However, proteins with a much higher molecular mass are exported into the cultural broth when the organism is cultivated in a liquid medium with peptone. Under certain conditions, exogenous proteins interact with the cytoplasmic membrane. These as well as some other findings imply that the cell wall may have microplots with an anomalous permeability, via which the regulated exchange of macromolecules is realized between the intracellular and outer media.
Yeasts capable of utilizing the non-ionogenic surfactant Laurox-9 were identified as Cryptococcus humicolus (Daszewska) Golubev and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (Jöerg) Harrison. IR spectrometry used for the quantitative assay of Laurox-9 showed that R. mucilaginosa utilized it as a sole carbon source. The first step of Laurox-9 metabolism was its hydrolytic cleavage yielding lauric acid and polyethyleneglycol. Optimal conditions were found for the electron-cytochemical localization of hydrolase involved in the primary degradation of Laurox-9 by yeasts. Its localization of the exocellular components was established.

The ultrastructural organization of the cell wall surface was studied in the fungus Aspergillus terreus 17P growing on different substrates: glucose, a sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) which is a soluble derivative of cellulose, ground straw. Cells grown on soluble substrates (glucose and Na-CMC) had a smooth surface in the logarithmic growth phase. Cells grown on straw, a solid insoluble substrate, released a substance of a polysaccharide nature which formed a thick fibrillar network on the surface. The electron-microscopic cytochemistry showed a relationship between cellulases and exocellular polysaccharides.
The localization of lipase in the cells of Candida paralipolytica was studied for the first time by the techniques of electron cytochemistry and immunocytochemistry. Lipase is formed at the outer surface of the cytoplasmic membrane and often is confined to its invaginations. The reaction products were detected in individual parts of the periplasmic space, in the cell wall, and in its exofibrillar components. Apparently, lipase is formed on the ribosomal-membrane complex. The above pattern is observed only in the cells with a high lipase activity, but not in the control. The two techniques gave similar results. A series of electronograms are presented.
