A lectin which binds specifically to beta-D-galactoside groups is present at the earliest stages of chick embryo development.

Extracts obtained from chick embryos at the pre-gastrula and gastrula stages are able to agglutinate trypsinized rabbit erythrocytes fixed with glutaraldehyde. Agglutination is inhibited by saccharides sharing a beta-D-galactopyranoside configuration. Agglutinin activity is also inhibited by desialysed fetuin which bears terminal galactose residues but not by native fetuin, desialysed agalacto-fetuin, bovine submaxillary mucin and desialysed bovine submaxillary mucin. Lectin activity is present in extracts obtained from the embryonic area of the blastoderms as well as in extracts from extra-embryonic endoderm and ectoderm. In extracts subjected to gel filtration on ECD Sepharose, lectin activity eluted between ovalbumim (mol. wt 45 000) and chymotrypsinogen (mol. wt 25 000). Under some experimental conditions, thiodigalactoside, the most potent inhibitor of lectin activity, inhibited the aggregation of cells of the extra-embryonic endoderm of the primitive chick embryo.

Crohn's disease in black patients.

The diagnosis of Crohn's disease in 13 patients (ten females and three males) at the Howard University Hospital during the ten-year period, 1965-1975, is examined. The most common presenting symptoms were right lower quadrant (RLQ) pain, diarrhea, anorexia, weight loss, and vomiting, while the most common physical finding was RLQ tenderness. Ileocolic involvement occurred most frequently. Eight patients had surgical resection. The most frequent operation was ileocolic resection with ileo-ascending colostomy. The chief indications for surgery were: (1) presumed appendicitis, (2) intestinal obstruction, and (3) internal fistulae.Crohn's disease seems to occur in blacks much less frequently than in whites. When compared to series of white patients reported by others, the series studied here has more females and more ileocolic involvement. In most other series, the greatest involvement is in the "ileum only" group.

Anemia and airline flight duties.

This investigation developed and provides guidelines for the determination and medical release of flight crew members for duty with hemoglobin values less than normal. This dilemma occurs commonly to the flight surgeon following blood donation, resolved hemorrhagic disorders, chronic idiopathic blood disorders, and pregnancy. Minimum safe values were computed and tabulated for otherwise healthy individuals at rest and exercise at the routine extremes of the flight environment of present pressurized jet airliners from known physiological parameters. These values were then correlated with the records of 62 pilots and stewardesses with subnormal hemoglobin values to assure the opertional predictive validity.

Cell surface changes during dedifferentiation in the metaplastic transformation of iris into lens.

Changes at the cell periphery during the dedifferentiative phase of the metaplastic transformation of iris into lens have been studied in Notophthalmus viridescens and Taricha granulosa using cell electrophoresis. Cell surface charge density increases as early as 1-3 days after lens removal. Cells of regenerates at 10-15 days after lentectomy have significantly lower electrophoretic mobilities than those of the irises of nonlentectomized newts. Decrease in surface charge density is due, at least in part, to the loss of ribonuclease- and neuraminidase-sensitive groups from the cell periphery. Loss of negatively charged groups from the cell surface appears to occur as cells go through dedifferentiation. Loss of cell surface components also occurs in the cells of the ventral iris which also undergo dedifFerentiation but do not regenerate a lens.
