The Sofia Juvenile Hypertension Study.

Sustained hypertension (H) was found in 6% of 21,500 school children aged 6 to 15 years studied in 1972-73 and again in 1982-83. The primary character of H was proved in 85%. Hemodynamic studies revealed a hyperkinetic type of circulation and elevated total peripheral resistance. Studies on lipid and carbohydrate metabolism showed a high rate of hyperlipoproteinemia with low levels of HDL-cholesterol and impaired glucose tolerance combined with high basal plasma triglycerides and plasma insulin before and after stimulation by glucose. In a follow-up study 10 years after the first one we established persistent H in 43% of the initially hypertensive children.

[Treatment and prevention of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and flutter with quinidine retard].

The ability of quinidine retard of restoring sinus rhythm and further maintenance after successful regulation were checked in 42 patients with flutter and fibrillation in an open clinical trial. Quinidine retard restores the sinus rhythm in less patients (60.0%) than quinidine sulphate (81,8%). At the same time, it maintains sinus rhythm in 91,4 per cent of the cases in anti-recurrence treatment. That makes quinidine retard adequate for long-term administration.

[Lipoatrophic diabetes with hypertrophic subaortic stenosis].

A rare case is described of the combination of lipotrophic diabetes with hyperrophic subaortic stenosis in a young female. The authors announce the good results from the administration of bromorgocryptin for the reduction of the considerable hyperlipoproteinemia in the patient. The scare experiences in literature from the administration of the preparation is emphasized as well as the difficulties in the explanation of its mechanisms of action, at the present stage of our knowledge.

[Alpha cholesterol in ischemic heart disease and myocardial infarct].

Alpha-cholesterol is one of the risk factors for the manifestation of myocardial infarction. The authors examined 48 patients with ischemic heart disease, complicated with myocardial infarction, 28 males and 20 females, aged from 40 to 60, treated at the Clinic of Cardiovascular Diseases with Intensive Unit, RIID--Med. Academy. Ninety three control subjects were examined for a comparison--43 males and 50 females, aged from 40 to 60. Lower alpha-cholesterol values were found in the patients with myocardial infarction. Those data coincide with the communications in literature. Alpha-cholesterol reduction could be assessed as an indirect risk factor of a atherosclerosis, ischemic heart disease resp.

[Micromethod for studying lipid groups in the serum].

A microanalytical variant for the determination of lipids and lipid groups in serum is described, by the application of chromatographis technique and densitometric measurement of the separated zones. The variant scheme is as follows: lipid extraction, distribution of the extract for determination into total lipids, total cholesterine and chromatographic separation of the lipid mixture. Sulphonamic acid, embeded in the layer is used in the carbonization of the zones from the chromatogram. The conditions of carbonization and densitometry are indicated. The accuracy and reproducibility of the analytical determinations according to the scheme presented meet the requirements. The calculation of the results from the densitogram in the adopted mg per 100 ml is through the usage of test established correction factors. Seven lipid indices could be determined in 0.2 ml serum and manipulation time analysis for 10 samples is two hours. A special advantage of the method proposed is the possibility of accurately studying the dynamic of the lipid group in different morbid states or at experimental work. The method could be adopted, without principal changes for analysis of tissue lipids.

Chemiluminescent analysis of the antioxidant and immunomodulation effects of several psychotropic drugs on peritoneal macrophages.

The present study describes the application of several chemiluminescent (CL) methods for evaluation of antioxidant and immunomodulation effects of psychotropic drugs upon phagocytes: KO2-induced luminal-dependent CL for detection of superoxide anion radicals in a pure chemical system; PMA- and A23187-induced CL of peritoneal macrophages for detection of free radicals in cell suspension; and CL, produced by the luciferase-catalyzed luciferin + ATP reaction, for evaluation of cell viability before and after drug application. These methods provide also a way to investigate the location of drug action. It was found that the psychotropic drugs in fluence the 'oxidative burst' of macrophages through two mechanisms: by expression of drug antioxidant properties and/or by a direct immunomodulation effect.
