Activation of the immunity system commonly followed the development of viral diseases. Neopterin is evidently a marker of the activation. Elevation of neopterin levels in AIDS and tumor patients correlates with the severity of the disease. Radioimmunoassay of neopterin content was performed in the sera of 11 patients with virus B hepatitis (6 patients with its acute pattern, 3 with its acute pattern concurrent with delta-infection and 2 subjects with chronic active virus B hepatitis). Mean neopterin content in the sera of virus B hepatitis patients was 19.9 +/- 5.7 nM/l being significantly higher than that in donors (5.0 +/- 0.8 nM/l) (p less than 0.001). In this line neopterin levels higher than 9 nM/l (the upper normal limits) were identified in 63% of the patients. Mean content of beta-2-microglobulin in hepatitis patients was 3.3 +/- 0.53 mg/l being significantly different from that in donors (1.8 +/- 0.3 mg/l) (p less than 0.05). Association between higher neopterin levels and the severity of the disease was fully proved clinically, with the exception of the two expired persons whose neopterin levels were within normal limits. The data obtained evidenced an increase in neopterin levels associated with virus B hepatitis. It widened the understanding of the disease pathogenesis and permitted the determination of neopterin levels be used in correlation with clinical data as a prognostic value for the course of the disease.
Two methods of measurement of nitrite and nitrate determination in human serum and plasma (a colorimetric method based on Griess reaction and a HPLC method) have been compared HPLC method revealed extremely low level of nitrites blood plasma, which was roughly the same (about 3 microM or less) in healthy donors, patients with diabetes and hypertension. The level of nitrates in the group of healthy donors (29.9 +/- 2.8 microM) is lower than in patients with diabetes (58.6 +/- 6.9 microM), and in patients with hypertension (35.4 +/- 2.5 microM). Comparison of data obtained by colorimetric and HPLC methods revealed close correlation (r = 0.77, p < 0.001). Methodical requirements for preparation of samples of serum and plasma of blood for analysis and correct intepretation of results are discussed in view of biochemical properties of nitric oxide molecule.
The study included 15 patients with nephrogenic hypertension of various genesis. 13 of them had unilateral disease, 2 bilateral one. The diagnosis was established from the data provided by a single captopril test, radionuclide and angiographic examinations. The blood for renin and prostaglandin quantitation was obtained from the renal veins and infrarenal portion of the vena cava inferior. The results show that in unilateral renal lesions prostaglandin E secretion on the affected side was significantly lower than on the contralateral side (p less than 0.05). Plasma renin activity in 3 patients with a contracted kidney was significantly lower on the affected side (p less than 0.05), though the rest 10 patients were reported to exhibit opposite results. No significant relationships occurred in the levels of prostaglandins I2, F2 alpha, thromboxane A2. It is suggested that renal ischemia may inhibit synthesis of depressor prostaglandin E2 in renal medullary interstice. A separate analysis is presented of plasma renin and prostaglandin activity in 2 cases of nephrogenic hypertension as a result of bilateral renal affection.

A procedure is described for production of antiserum against peptide hormone Arg-vasopressin. A sensitive immunoenzyme assay is developed for estimation of the antiserum activity and specificity.
Twelve volunteers, aged 45-55 years, with hypertension type neurocirculatory dystonia were exposed to 7-day "dry" immersion. Plasma, platelet and vessel hemostasis was investigated. "Dry" immersion was found to stimulate hypercoagulatory changes in the above hemostasis systems. It was also shown that the test subjects developed a slow process of readaptation.

In experiments set up on albino male-rats by using Cr51 the permeability of physiological barriers to hexad stable chromium (sodium chromate), introduced with water per os in doses of 2.5 and 2250 gamma/kg was studied and the chromium balance in the rats' organism with an addition of the same doses of trivalent (chromium sulfide) chromium to the ration investigated. With all the tested additions of stable hexad chromium in water Cr51 is prevalently retained in the stomach and intestines. With an addition of 2.5 gamma/kg of stable chromium to the ration and without chromium addition to the ration it is only 7.8--9.5 per cent of the introduced Cr51 that is excreted in 4 days, the respective figures with additions of 24 gamma/kg and 2250 gamma/kg being 59.7 and 54.5 per cent. An addition of 2.5 gamma/kg of chromium to the ration is physiologically justified, for with this dose the retention in the barriers and excretion of chromium with this dose do not increase, whereas higher doses of tri- and hexavalent chromium are non-physiological, since with these doses the retention of chromium by physiological barriers sharply increases and so doses its elimination from the organism.
Experiments were made on 188 white rats. Immunoreactive aldosterone, sodium and calcium excretion with urine were determined. Administration of the polypeptide drug epithalamine to intact animals promoted sodium excretion reduction, immunoreactive aldosterone elevation in the blood plasma. On the contrary, during epithalamine administration following aldosterone secretion stimulation (by shock reproduction) there was an increase in sodium excretion and a decrease in the aldosterone level. It is concluded that the epiphysis produces a different action on adrenal mineralocorticoids, depending on their initial function.

The content of immunoreactive insulin (IRI) and of immunoreactive C-peptide (IRCP) was determined in the relatives of patients with juvenile diabetes mellitus and in healthy persons during the oral glucose tolerance test (GTT). The IRCP content was higher than the IRI content. The IRI and IRCP curves were identical in persons with normal and doubtful GTT results; these curves differed from those in patients with latent and manifest diabetes which were torpid in character. The coefficient of molar IRCP/IRI proportion differed in persons with pathological GTT results as compared with the normal.
