Electroacoustic theory for concentrated colloids with overlapped DLs at arbitrary kappa alpha. I. Application to nanocolloids and nonaqueous colloids.

Existing theories of electroacoustic phenomena in concentrated colloids neglect the possibility of double layer overlap and are valid mostly for the "thin double layer," when the double layer thickness is much less than the particle size. In this paper we present a new electroacoustic theory which removes this restriction. This would make this new theory applicable to characterizing a variety of aqueous nanocolloids and of nonaqueous dispersions. There are two versions of the theory leading to the analytical solutions. The first version corresponds to strongly overlapped diffuse layers (so-called quasi-homogeneous model). It yields a simple analytical formula for colloid vibration current (CVI), which is valid for arbitrary ultrasound frequency, but for restricted kappa alpha range. This version of the theory, as well the Smoluchowski theory for microelectrophoresis, is independent of particle shape and polydispersity. This makes it very attractive for practical use, with the hope that it might be as useful as classical Smoluchowski theory. In order to determine the kappa alpha range of the quasi-homogeneous model validity we develop the second version that limits ultrasound frequency, but applies no restriction on kappa alpha. The ultrasound frequency should substantially exceed the Maxwell-Wagner relaxation frequency. This limitation makes active conductivity related current negligible compared to the passive dielectric displacement current. It is possible to derive an expression for CVI in the concentrated dispersion as formulae inhering definite integrals with integrands depending on equilibrium potential distribution. This second version allowed us to estimate the ranges of the applicability of the first, quasi-homogeneous version. It turns out that the quasi-homogeneous model works for kappa alpha values up to almost 1. For instance, at volume fraction 30%, the highest kappa alpha limit of the quasi-homogeneous model is 0.65. Therefore, this version of the electroacoustic theory is valid for almost all nonaqueous dispersions and a wide variety of nanocolloids, especially with sizes under 100 nm.

Oxidative stress in keratinocytes as an etiopathogenetic factor of psoriasis.

A new etiopathogenetic concept of psoriasis is proposed, which considers psoriasis as a typical inflammatory process characterized by increased antioxidant activity and overexpression of apoptotic receptors. Under these conditions, hyperstimulation of germinative layer cells proliferation dramatically accelerates keratinocyte passage towards apoptotic effect of atmospheric oxygen and its reactive species dooming to death cells with enhanced expression of apoptotic receptors. Oxidative stress of nondifferentiated keratinocytes triggers the formation of defective horny layer, the key mechanism of psoriasis.

[Diagnostic importance of analyzing the expired air in alcoholism].

The new highly effective method of alcoholism diagnosis was proposed. It included gas-chromatography analysis of breathed out air. The alcoholism was diagnosed if ethane and paraldehyde in this air to be less than 0.47 nM 0.20 nM respectively, pentane level was more that 0.47 nM while ethanol content was found in the range of 0.73-1.96 nM. If ethane concentration proved to be higher that 0.47 nM alcoholism diagnosis was established when ethylene level was found between 0.01-0.19 nM. The assay's diagnostic importance was confirmed by observation of 44 alcoholic patients as well as 26 healthy male individuals which did not consume alcohol.

[Indirect electrochemical oxidation using active oxygen carriers in a model of detoxicating function of the liver].

As development of the electrochemical model of liver tissue monooxygenase system met with a serious problem of compatibility between electrochemical unit and blood, a procedure of indirect electrochemical oxidation of blood was proposed where carriers of active oxygen were used. Blood did not contact with the electrochemical system and electrolysis occurred in solution of oxygen carrier (0.89% NaCl), which accumulated active oxygen in the form of sodium hypochlorite. Sodium hypochlorite, administered into patients, enabled to bypass "the effect of protein protection" of toxic metabolites; it simulated both liver tissue monooxygenase functions and phagocytosis molecular mechanisms.

[Effect of the constant magnetic field on the chemoluminescence of the skin during its destruction].

A study was carried out of the effect of constant magnetic field of magnitophore applicator ALM-2 (CMFMA) with magnetic induction B on the surface, in the active centre zone--30 MT and gradient B--5 mT/mm on the intensity of peroxidation of lipids in the human skin during its destruction and under hypothermia. Parameters of ultralow chemoluminescence of skin homogenates initiated by bivalent iron ions were considered as intensity indices of lipid peroxidation. It has been shown that skin incubation for 24 hours under CMFMA effect rules out the strengthening of lipid peroxidation, while it takes place at skin incubation under normal conditions.

[Diagnostic value of gas chromatographic study of exhaled air].

The authors analyze the problem of collection and concentration of exhaled air samples and its gas chromatographic measurement. A simple method for collection, transportation, and gas chromatographic analysis of alveolar air is suggested. The results indicate changes in the alveolar air composition during various diseases.
