Alcohol consumption and blood pressure in school children.

The present report focuses on the relationship between alcohol consumption, estimated with the use of a seven day food record, and blood pressure in a group of 203 male and female school children with a mean age of 11 year. 50.5% of the male and 39.4% of the female children reported use of alcoholic beverages. The average weekly ethanol consumption in these regular drinkers was 73.9 ml/week for boys and 53.1 ml/week for girls. The results of the analyses fail to show any significant association between alcohol consumption and blood pressure levels. The possibility of the association between alcohol and hypertension being dependent on advanced age is discussed in view of the present results and previously published reports.

Validity for epidemiological studies of long-term cryoconservation of steroid and protein hormones in serum and plasma.

Prospective studies based on the storage of biological samples at low temperature have opened new perspectives in etiological research on cancer. In planning these studies a crucial question is to evaluate whether the long-term preservation of samples is able to affect the categorization of the subjects involved. In the frame of the ORDET project, a prospective study of hormones and diet in the etiology of breast cancer provided with a -80 degrees C biological bank, we have evaluated the stability of estradiol, free and total testosterone, and prolactin in serum and plasma samples over 3 years of cryoconservation. Study results showed that the subjects maintained almost the same rank by hormonal concentration throughout the 3-year period for all hormones. Looking at the stability over time, estradiol, prolactin, and total testosterone had fairly good performance for both serum and plasma. Serum-free testosterone increased in time up to 30%, whereas progesterone decreased by about 40% of the initial concentration. However, the reliability of the individual categorization by hormonal level suggests the validity of low temperature storage for epidemiological purposes, at least for hormonal parameters.

Measure of cancer prevalence with a computerized program: an example on larynx cancer.

In spite of the great value from the health planning point of view, only a few Cancer Registries have produced measures of prevalence. PREVAL is a computerized program for personal computers that provides prevalence data expressed as number or proportion. The program calculates prevalence, cross-classified by years from diagnosis and age. PREVAL reads data on the vital status, available from those Cancer Registries that have carried out population-based survival studies. Larynx cancer in males has been used as an example. Analysis has been performed on 15-year follow-up data of 840 incidence cases registered during 1976-1987 period from Lombardy Cancer Registry. In 1987, larynx cancer prevalence proportions are 67.6 per 100,000 for patients with up to 5 years from diagnosis and 108.4 per 100,000 for those with up to 10 years. The Authors will provide PREVAL free of charge upon request.
