The associated diseases with leprosy.

The prevalence of cutaneous, medical and surgical disorders was studied in 846 leprosy patients. Common cutaneous disorders among leprosy patients were pityriasis versicolor, tinea, pyodermas, warts, acquired ichthyosis, scabies, pediculosis and callosities. Only pityriasis versicolor had higher incidence when compared to general population. Common medical diseases were tuberculosis, infective hepatitis and diabetes mellitus. The epidemiological importance of their co-existence with leprosy is discussed and relevant literature of other diseases found to be frequently associated with leprosy is reviewed.

Thoracoplasty with intercostal myoplasty for closure of an empyema cavity and bronchopleural fistula.

Intercostal myoplasty with thoracoplasty was performed in 42 patients with tubercular and bacterial empyema, after the failure of conventional therapy with antibiotics, antitubercular drugs and closed drainage. In the 18 cases with bronchopleural fistula, this was closed and the drainage tube was removed after 23 to 51 days. The procedure was well-tolerated by all the patients, and is safe and effective in patients with chronic empyema with or without bronchopleural fistula where resectional surgery or decortication is not possible due to extensive bilateral disease or low cardiorespiratory reserve. Successful ligation and closure of bronchopleural fistula without any mortality was a unique feature of this procedure.

Demonstration of sugar and determination of the secretor status from urine stains of diabetics.

In this preliminary study urine an saliva samples have been typed for the presence of ABH-Blood-Group specific substances from fresh samples and the stains prepared therefrom. Fresh samples have been typed by the Absorption-Inhibition and the stains by the Absorption-Elution-Technique. 42 of saliva and 37 of the urine samples (fresh) have been found to be secretors, while from the stains 36 (= 72 Prozent) and 32 (= 64 Prozent) samples would be typed correctly from saliva and urine stains. The Benedict's Test for sugar has been found to be positive in 35 of the fresh urine samples where as from stains 31 (= 62 Prozent) could be typed correctly. On the basis of the above study the following conclusions emerge out. 1. Benedict's Test for sugar may be conveniently used in the field of Forensic Science for analysing urine stains in order to exclude persons not actually involved in a crime. 2. Persons who secret ABH-Substances in saliva may not in all cases secrete them in urine.
