Sensitivity of 25 strains of Pityrosporum sp. to four commercial shampoos was tested using a gel diffusion method and determination of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). All the shampoos when undiluted gave inhibition zones in the gel diffusion test with 13 of the 15 strains tested. Two strains were resistant to 'Polytar'. 'Polytar' was fungistatic, 'Selsun' 'Cetavlon P.C.' and 'Genisol' were fungicidal. MIC results showed the yeast to be most sensitive to 'Cetavlon' and 'Selsun'.

Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus following radiation therapy.

Several years after postmastectomy radiation therapy, lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA) developed in two patients within the radiation fields. This sequence, to our knowledge, has not previously been described. The etiology of LSA is largely unknown, but trauma has been implicated as a provoking factor in some cases, and LSA might be an isomorphic response to the trauma of radiation therapy.

Multicentric pigmented Bowen's disease of the genitalia associated with carcinoma in situ of the cervix.

A case of multicentric pigmented Bowen's disease in a 45 year old woman with a previous history of carcinoma of the cervix is described. The two conditions may have a common pathogenesis, and a preceding viral infection with herpes simplex or human papillomavirus could be of aetiological relevance. Patients with multicentric pigmented Bowen's disease may be at risk of developing other tumours of the genital tract. Treatment with carbon dioxide laser proved effective.

Secondary syphilis with framboesiform facial lesions: a case report.

A 15-year-old schoolgirl presented with a generalised progressive skin rash of six months' duration, which had been previously diagnosed as psoriasis. The facial skin lesions were particularly prominent and nodular in form. Serological tests confirmed the diagnosis of secondary syphilis, which responded to treatment.

Extensive nevus comedonicus.

A 19-year-old woman had an extensive nevus comedonicus affecting the left arm, trunk, and leg. Her condition was complicated by episodes of recurrent cyst formation and secondary infection. These were reduced in extent and frequency during 14 months of treatment with a combined progesterone-estrogen contraceptive preparation, and the appearance of the lesions affecting the leg was improved. The clinical features, histogenesis, histology, and treatment of nevus comedonicus are discussed.

The influence of treatment of the paralesional skin with dithranol on healing in psoriasis.

Application of dithranol confined to the normal skin surrounding thirty-six psoriatic lesions produced improvement in twenty-four lesions, which was significantly more than the improvement noted in four of thirty-six control lesions left untreated. Such healing was temporary and slower than in lesions treated conventionally. It is suggested that the apparently normal skin around a psoriatic lesion under treatment influences the psoriasis.

The HL-A system and psoriasis.

A study of 157 psoriatic patients showed that 48.4% were HL-A 17 positive (control 6.0%). The relative risk of psoriasis in HL-A 17 positive individuals (14.7) was significantly higher than that reported from other centes, whilst that for HL-A 13 was lower. HL-A 17 was commoner in femal patients and associated with an earlier age of onset of psoriasis than when HL-A 17 was absent. The earlier age of onset in females is largely due to the higher frequency of HL-A 17. Family studies show that often the ingeritance of HL-A 17 is a necessary condition for psoriasis to appear and this probably applies in some instances to HL-A 13. It is likely that there is interaction between HL-A 17 and HL-A 13 and other genes predisposing to psoriasis. In some families there appears to be no association between psoriasis and the HL-A system. The general significance of these findings is discussed.
