Analysis of patents for inventions evaluating functional state proved decreased research and invention activities in Russian Federation since 1990 till 2004 and lower innovation prospects of inventions.
Adaptation disorders lie behind 70 to 80% of morbidity among and medical disqualification of flyers. Mental health is the hallmark of the psychoprophylaxis system defining its structural and methodical principles, and purpose. Counteraction to the psych dependent adaptation disorders requires consolidation of efforts of the services responsible for flyers professional health and flight safety; emphasis on motivation and social well-being of flyers is imperative.
To optimize the functional state of air traffic controllers on the night shift a program of combined vibroelectrical stimulation of active points on the skin repeated every 2 hours without assistance has been developed. The test group and the control group included 28 and 21 employees, respectively. The positive effect was expressed by statistically significant improvement of the objective parameters of job efficiency, functional state and performance, and the activities of physiological regulation and metabolism.

One hundred and twenty one patients underwent psychological examinations using personality-oriented tests (a standard method of personality examinations and a projective aviation test), 24 of whom displayed neurotic states and 97--psychosomatic diseases. Clinical and psychological examinations helped identify two basic patterns of psychic adaptation to stressful flying activities which manifested as asthenic trends and predisposition to nonconformist behaviour. In the control group, consisting of 165 graduates of a flying school, these patterns of psychic adaptation were rarely seen. The results were statistically significant. These patterns of mental adaptation of the personality can be viewed as risk factors for the development of psychogenic pathologies in the flying personnel.
A large number of flight accidents and catastrophes associated with the human factor, high nervous and psychic tension when being on duty, increasing trend towards a greater incidence of psychogenic diseases responsible for pilots to be grounded make it necessary to develop a system of primary psychoprophylaxis of the flying personnel and to help them with various social, psychohygienic and psychoprophylactic measures. This paper presents basic psychoprophylactic measures of medical expertise, professional training and psychological selection. Proper development of these measures will contribute to flight safety and pilot longevity.

One hundred and fifty nine applicants who passed entrance examinations and were admitted to the flight school were kept under careful psychological observation and follow-up. It was found that those applicants who grew and developed in unfavorable conditions, i. e. under the influence of risk factors which include young age to start smoking, nervous shocks in childhood and adolescence, unstable family relations, alcoholic parents, etc., failed and were expelled from the school due to different reasons in a greater number of cases (p less than 0.01). Thus professional selection should include accentuated attention to risk factors that accompanied the years of personality formation which may help predict their inadequacies in psychic adaptation to the flying profession.
The reliability of rapid prediction of the disciplined or undisciplined behavior of cadets using selected projective tests (modified apperception test, Rosenzweig test of picture frustration, Zondi test) was investigated. The tests were performed on 50 certified pilots and 400 cadets. By means of correlation and factor analyses the references given to the cadets by their seniors were compared with the results of the projective tests. It was found that the modified apperception test can be used to evaluate cadet's behavior within a comparatively short time. Marked extrapunitive trend combined with self-defence type of solution of the Rosenzweig test diminished the conformity of the personality and facilitated the development of conflict situations and undisciplined acts. The undisciplined cadets preferably selected pictures of seriously ill patients with epilepsy, catatonia or hysteria. These probability characteristics help to distinguish the cadets that need specific attention and supervision.
