[Effect of chronic irradiation on the genetic structure of natural populations of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh].

The genetic structure of Arabidopsis thaliana populations from in the Chernobyl zone of radioactive contamination was studied. The dynamics of genotypic and allele frequencies of eight polymorphic loci were described. Analysis of the results obtained and earlier data revealed selection for loci Per1 and Acp2. Sharp fluctuations of allele frequencies were observed in consecutive generations of chronically irradiated A. thaliana populations. These fluctuations led to replacement of the most frequent alleles, including those close to fixation.

Genetic consequences of radioactive contamination for populations of Arabidopsis.

Populations of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. growing within a 30 km radius of Chernobyl and characterized by radioactive contamination levels ranging from 0.02 to 240 mR h-1 were analyzed for the frequency of embryonic lethal mutations in 1987 and 1988. Plots that retained high levels of radioactive contamination long after the initial exposure were characterized by a high frequency of mutant plants. Plots with low levels of radioactive contamination, which were significantly reduced soon after exposure, were characterized by a decrease in the initially high proportion of mutant plants. Populations of Arabidopsis exposed to insignificant radioactive contamination showed no increase in the frequency of mutant plants; mutation levels were comparable to those found in control plants.

[Protection from radon emissions from a radon laboratory].

An absorbing chuck with activated coal has been suggested for absorbing radon and its daughter products' wastes from the air which are formed in the device YPP-1 in the process of preparation of radon water concentrate. Testing of such a device has shown that it is simple, reliable and efficient in functioning, thus it can be recommended to be used in radon laboratories.

[Differential diagnosis of the cavitary form of lung cancer and lung abscess].

Data on the clinical picture and diagnosis in 9 patients with the cavitary from of lung cancer are presented. The differential diagnostic criteria of the abscess and cavitary form of lung cancer are analyzed in detail. The authors show the role of clinico-rentgenological examinations for more exact diagnosis of the main disease.

[Errors in the diagnosis of traumatic ruptures of the diaphragm].

Traumatic ruptures of the diaphragm were analyzed in 18 cases. The main causes of errors in the diagnosis of the injury were considered to be the following ones: 1. the underestimation or misunderstanding of different clinico-roentgenological forms of injuries of the diaphragm and resulting peculiarities of the course of the disease; 2. simultaneous injuries of the abdominal cavity organs; 3. the underestimation of severity of the trauma.

[Injuries of the heart and pericardium].

In the peace time wounds of the heart occur in 13-15% of penetrating injuries of the chest. Of leading importance in diagnostics of heart wounds is the triad of symptoms: hemorrhage, tamponage of the heart, wound in the heart projection. The main task in the treatment of heart wounds is to suture the wound.

[Genetic effects of induced in populations by the radioactive nuclear fission products of 235U. II. Prognostication of the genetic effectiveness of irradiation at low dose rates].

Experiments have been carried out on Chlorella, beans, wheat and developing loach eggs to study the dose-response relationship (dose-function of dose rate) with 90Sr, 90Y and 147Pm as the sources of beta-radiation. The yield of point mutations in Chlorella under 147Pm and that of chromosome aberrations in cells of bean roof and apical meristem tissue as well as in meiosis of wheat and bean cells irradiated by 90Sr- 90Y is proved to show degree dependence at a dose less than 1. It means that the dose which doubles the number of induced mutations is not constant and depends on the dose rate. Reverse relationship is shown between dose intensity and genetic effect per dose unit. The decrease in the yield of genetic damages in the range of dose rates analysed is supposed to be due to repair activation induced by ionizing radiations. In view of these results, consideration is given to the role of the level of spontaneous mutagenesis in estimation of the resolution of test systems. An increase in the level of the spontaneous mutational process is shown to increase the size of population samples which are ment, when analysed, to reveal statistically significant differences between the effect observed and the level of spontaneous mutagenesis. The possibility of application of the experimental results to the prediction of effects of ionizing radiations on natural animal and plant populations is considered.
