Collaborative study of the determination of boric acid in caviar by emission spectroscopy.

Caviar samples were spiked at the 0.1 and 0.2% levels and digested with nitric acid in a closed Teflon-lined digestion vessel to prevent volatility losses. The boron was complexed with 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol and extracted into methylisobulty ketone. The emission of the boron oxide band was measured in a nitrous oxidehydrogen flame. The mean recoveries at the 0.1 and 0.2% levels for 6 collaborators were 95.7 and 97.1%, respectively.

The significance of the HBeAg/anti-HBe system in hemodialysis patients. A multicenter study.

The HBeAg/anti-HBe system was studied as a marker of infectivity and chronic progressive liver disease in 460 hemodialysis patients. The importance of HBeAg as an index of infectivity was confirmed in that it was present simultaneously with specific DNA polymerase (31 patients) and by the presence of widely diffuse core particles in the hepatocyte nuclei (revealed by biopsy in six patients). In contrast, HBeAg showed no useful correlation with progressive liver disease, the absence of which was confirmed in all cases by biochemical and histological studies.

Monocytoid B-cell lymphoma of the prostate.

A case of a primary malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the prostate, with the histological and immunohistochemical features of monocytoid B-cell lymphoma, is presented. The tumor histology was identical to that described in the forms of node-based monocytoid B-cell lymphoma being composed of a dense, monomorphous lymphoid infiltrate with ovoid nuclei and rather abundant, pale cytoplasm. Phenotypic analysis revealed high expression of B markers 4KB5 and L26, and negativity for T-associated antigens. This unusual localization broadens the spectrum of extra-nodal sites of monocytoid B-cell lymphoma.

HSP10 selective preference for myeloid and megakaryocytic precursors in normal human bone marrow.

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) constitute a heterogeneous family of proteins involved in cell homeostasis. During cell life they are involved in harmful insults, as well as in immune and inflammatory reactions. It is known that they regulate gene expression, and cell proliferation, differentiation and death. HSP60 is a mitochondrial chaperonin, highly preserved during evolution, responsible of protein folding. Its function is strictly dependent on HSP10 in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic elements. We investigated the presence and the expression of HSP60 and HSP10 in a series of 20 normal human bone marrow specimens (NHBM) by the means of immunohistochemistry. NHBM showed no expression of HSP60, probably due to its being below the detectable threshold, as already demonstrated in other normal human tissues. By contrast, HSP10 showed a selective positivity for myeloid and megakaryocytic lineages. The positivity was restricted to precursor cells, while mature elements were constantly negative. We postulate that HSP10 plays a role in bone marrow cell differentiation other than being a mitochondrial co-chaperonin. The present data emphasize the role of HSP10 during cellular homeostasis and encourage further investigations in this field.

[Epulides: the histopathological and epidemiological aspects].

The authors examined 195 epulides in order to point out distribution of this pathology in relation to some clinical, epidemiological and histopathological parameters. The Authors have found that the epulis is more prevalent in the female sex and in the anterior sextants. The epulides were subdivided on the basis of histopathological findings into: pyogenic granuloma (GP), giant cell granuloma (GGC), fibrous hyperplasia (IF), peripheral fibroma with calcification (FPC) and variety lympho-plasma-cellular (LP). Furthermore investigating the correlation between sex and histopathological variety it was found a significant prevalence of the GGC in the male sex, whereas the correlations within the age's sets are the followings: the LP is more prevalent in the IV age set (46-60 years), whereas the GP is more prevalent in the III age set (31-45 years) and in the V age set (greater than 60 years). This finding revaluates the hormone's influence in the vascular proliferation of the GP. IF and FPC are, in percentage, less frequent than others histopathological variety regarding to the size, it was found that GGC is the bigger than the other types, whereas IF is the smaller.

Xanthogranulomatous salpingitis. Case report and review of the literature.

A xanthogranulomatous salpingitis, occurring in a fifty-two year old patient and appearing itself as a hydrosalpinx, is reported. The histological picture was characterized by the presence of several foamy histiocytes admixed with other inflammatory cells. Considerations about epidemiology, etiopathogenetic mechanisms and problems of differential diagnosis with other diseases are discussed.
