Ultrasonic echo-location (UEL) was used in 14 patients with nonspecific thoracoabdominal aortoarteritis before and after surgical treatment. Ultrasonic data were compared with aortographic and intraoperative findings. Patients with atherosclerosis of the abdominal aorta and congenital hypoplasia of the latter made up the control group. UEL is regarded as a fairly informative method of the diagnosis of nonspecific aortoarteritis, as thickened walls of the aorta and other affected vessels as well as irregular indurations involving aortic walls and para-aortic fat are pathognomonic signs of nonspecific aortoarteritis that differentiate it basically from other kinds of lesions. Besides, UEL is capable of early detection of the condition and the assessment of the routes of pathologic spread. After surgery, UEL might be used to control the state of the alloprosthesis.

The paper is concerned with the results of assaying hepatocyte function on the basis of an adaptive pharmacokinetic model worked out by the authors. Hepatoscintigraphy with 99mTc-HIDA was used in 3 phases: the vascular phase of RP transport (the 1st min of investigation, scintigrams with a 2 s interval), the parenchymatous phase (with a 20 s interval in subsequent 10 min), the biliary phase (with a 3 min interval). The hepatocytic phase of 99mTc-HIDA transport was evaluated on the basis of the adaptive 5-compartmental model calculating the value of transport constants. In terms of differential diagnosis, the intercompartmental constants K1,2 (blood-liver) and K2,1 (liver-blood) turned out to be the most informative. Thus the assaying of hepatocyte transport function using the proposed adaptive model helps to define the degree of liver involvement in a pathological process, to choose the therapeutic tactics and method, to evaluate its efficacy and to predict possible complications.

Albumin metabolism was studied with the aid of 131 I- albumin in human blood serum in 5 healthy individuals and 40 patients with chronic cardiac insufficiency. It is shown that in patients with different degrees of circulatory insufficiency the loss of albumin with feces into gastro-intestinal lumen does not exceed the loss in the healthy individuals. The cardiac insufficiency is characterized by intracellular metabolic disorders of albumin of the hypercatabolic type.

Radionuclide gastroscopy conducted in patients with vast purulent wounds and sepsis disclosed reduced motor-evacuatory function of the stomach and the rate of its fractional emptying, that supports the necessity of continuous administration of nutrient mixtures by a drip method. A significant improvement of the motor evacuatory function and the rate of fractionated emptying of the stomach, 9-12 days after the commencement of the enteral (tube) nutrition, has shown the necessity of its use at the early stages of the course of severe purulent infection. The investigation of the absorptive capacity of the intestine with the use of the D-xylose test has revealed that it is insignificantly decreased in 82.6% of patients with severe purulent infection, and tube nutrition in such patients could be successfully conducted. Only in 17.4% of the patients the adsorptive capacity of the intestine was significantly decreased, and in these cases predominantly parenteral nutrition was recommended.
Protein assimilation was studied by means of radionuclide diagnosis methods, using 131I-albumin, in 10 patients with grave burns, fed a high-caloric dosed diet via a gastric tube (HCDGT). Simultaneously, the intestinal absorption was studied by the alpha-xylose test, and some protein metabolism parameters were investigated. The level of protein assimilation in burned patients was found to fluctuate within a wide range and to be most often reduced. A direct relationship was observed between protein assimilation and small intestine absorption. The degree of protein assimilation influenced the time course of protein metabolism: in all the examined patients on HCDGT a positive tendency of the anabolic processes was observed.
