In vitro studies with netilmicin compared with amikacin, gentamicin, and tobramycin.

Netilmicin, a new semisynthetic aminoglycoside derived by ethylation of the 1-N position of the deoxystreptamine ring of sisomicin, was tested in vitro with 4,070 strains of gram-negative bacilli isolated at the UCLA Medical Center during 1975 to 1976, using the agar dilution technique and an inoculum of approximately 10(4) organisms. Results were compared with those simultaneously obtained for amikacin, gentamicin, and tobramycin. Using Mueller-Hinton medium, inhibitory concentrations in broth correlated with those obtained by the agar dilution method except for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, where a 2- to 16-fold difference in susceptibility was noted. For most clinically significant Enterobacteriaceae and P. aeruginosa, the activity of netilmicin in vitro was comparable or superior to that of gentamicin, tobramycin, and amikacin with respect to potency by weight and achievable blood levels. Against gentamicin-resistant strains (MIC > 16 mug/ml), the activity of netilmicin paralleled that of amikacin with the exception of Providencia stuartii, which was inhibited by amikacin but not by netilmicin.

Visualizing the evolution of abnormal metabolic networks in the brain using PET.

By applying novel statistical methods and visualization techniques to PET data obtained from combined groups of patients and normals, we are able to illustrate topographic covariance profiles unique to neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's Disease at various stages of progression. Each profile represents a neuroanatomical network of metabolically covarying regions. The expression of the profile in each patient is characterized by a subject score which can correlate with independent clinical disease severity measures. To visualize these profiles, a semi-automatic routine is used (3D) animation of the metabolic topography as it evolves from initial to final stages of the disease.

Contralateral temporal hypometabolism on positron emission tomography in temporal lobe epilepsy.

INTRODUCTION: No detailed case studies report lateralised hypometabolism on positron emission tomography (PET) contralateral to the epileptogenic focus in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed 18F fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET in two intractable TLE patients. RESULTS: One had right temporal interictal spikes on electroencephalography (EEG) and a right medial temporal lobe lesion on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). FDG-PET showed decreased uptake in the left temporal lobe. Right temporal ictal onset, with bilateral interictal epileptiform activity, occurred on intracranial EEG. He is seizure free after right temporal lobectomy and ganglioglioma resection. The second had right temporal lobe interictal and ictal EEG activity. MRI demonstrated right anteriomedial temporal increased T2 signal. Neuropsychology revealed bilateral cognitive dysfunction. FDG-PET showed left anterior temporal and lateral frontal hypometabolism. He is seizure free after right temporal lobectomy. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that regional uptake asymmetry on FDG-PET may be give misleading lateralising information in TLE.

Evaluation of antacid gel preparations available commercially in the Indian market.

A scoring system based on the neutralising capacity, cost efficiency and time of buffering of twenty four commercially available antacid gels was analysed. A gel scoring eight out of the ten points was considered as the best antacid. The study provides a practical guide in choosing a quick neutralizing and low cost antacid gel.

Role of circulating immune complexes and platelet aggregation in the development of experimentally induced atherosclerosis in monkeys with normal intact vas deferens and following vasectomy.

The study was undertaken in normal and vasectomized monkeys to elucidate the relationship of circulating immune complexes and platelet aggregability with experimental aortic and coronary atherosclerosis. Four groups of animals, viz. sham-vasectomized stock diet fed, vasectomized stock diet fed, sham-vasectomized atherogenic diet fed, were studied for a period of 1 year. An increased incidence of atherosclerosis was noted with high levels of circulating immune complexes in vasectomized monkeys. Platelets obtained from atherogenic diet fed monkeys had a clear tendency of increased aggregation and agglutination in the presence of ADP, epinephrine and ristocetin respectively. Vasectomy produced a significant enhancement in platelet aggregation response with ADP and epinephrine in atherogenic diet fed animals. The aortic and coronary atherosclerosis was also significantly increased in atherogenic diet fed groups both with and without vasectomy.

Prostaglandin F2 alpha in leprosy--a preliminary study.

Prostaglandin F2 alpha was estimated in the sera of fifty patients in the leprosy spectrum to find out the status of prostaglandins in response to Mycobacterium leprae. Contrary to expectation, PGF2 alpha could be detected in only twenty-eight percent of leprosy patients. This preliminary finding is discussed in detail in the paper.
