[Spontaneous variation of Streptomyces griseus lysing staphylococci].

Spontaneous variation of Str. griseus was studied. 7 variants were isolated which go into the homologous series of the hereditary variability of apigment actinomycetes. The confidence intervals of the correlative relationship between the cultural and morphological features of the spontaneous variants and the level of their lytic activity did not over lap at p 0.95, which indicates that the difference is also significant by this feature. A possibility for a certain increase of the culture activity by selection of spontaneous variants is shown.

[Taxonomy of fluorescent streptomyces based on a comparative population analysis].

A revision of the taxonomy for the fluorescent subgroup of streptomycetes has confirmed experimentally that it is expedient to use the comparative population-taxonomic analysis as a new approach to the taxonomy of actinomycetes, which makes it possible to establish relationships between cultures being compared. It has been shown that the species Streptomyces galbofluorescens and S. fluorescens are merely spontaneous variants in the composition of the parent population of S. chrysomallus and therefore bear no taxonomic and nomenclature status. Consequently, the fluorescent subgroup consists of two (rather than the earlier described four) species: S. chrysomallus and S. citreofluorescens. The names S. galbofluorescens and S. fluorescens should be regarded as synonyms of the name S. chrysomallus. The culture of S. chrysomallus was found to contain a water-soluble antibacterial antibiotic. Three monosynthetic variants were isolated from the population of S. chrysomallus.

[Medical errors in acute cholecystitis].

Different medical errors were committed in 147 of 1029 patients (14.28%) operated for acute cholecystitis. Diagnostic errors were noted in 66 patients (44.90%). Diagnostic errors in patients older than 60 were committed much more often than in patients younger than 60. In men such errors were committed 2 times as often as in women. Tactical errors were revealed in 35 patients (23.81%). Some or other defects of the operation technique were noted in 46 patients (31.29%).

The occurrence of teichoic acids in streptomycetes.

The presence of teichoic acids in a number of streptomycetes led to the conclusion that these biopolymers were widely spread in genus Streptomyces. The nature of the teichoic acid present in the mycelium was determined by extracting it with 10% trichloroacetic acid, precipitating it with ethanol and identifying the precipitated polymer by partial acid and alkali hydrolysis to alditol, alditol phosphates and glycosylalditol phosphates. Most strains examined in this survey contained glycerol or ribitol teichoic acids; in some cases neither type was detected. Structurally teichoic acids closely resemble those of other genera of gram-positive bacteria and in many cases represent poly(glycerol phosphate) and poly(ribitol phosphate) chains. The proportion of alditol residues bearing sugar substituents varied widely. Three species of genus Streptoverticillium contained glycerol teichoic acids. It is believed that some of the data presented in this paper might be used with some success in taxonomic studies of streptomycetes.

[Acylase activity of groups of actinomycetes and bacteria].

The acylase activity of 113 actinomycetous strains and 71 bacterial strains was studied. A number of strains producing acylases, hydrolyzing phenoxymethylpenicillin was detected among the actinomycetous cultures and a number of strains producing acylases active against ampicillin and benzylpenicillin was detected among the bacterial cultures. These acylases may be used in production of semisynthetic beta-lactam antibiotics and their semiproducts.

[Lysis of the cellular walls of Streptococcus group A by enzymes produced by actinomycetes].

More than 80 cultures of actinomycetes belonging to different taxanomic groups were studied with a purpose of screening actinomycetes actively producing enzymes lyzing the cell walls of group A streptococci. 31 strains of the actinomycetes producing enzymes which lyzed the cell walls by 20-50 and 60-80 per cent within 1 and 4 hours respectively were selected. The proteolytic activity of the enzymes produced by these strains was also studied. It was shown that 4 cultures, i.e. Actinomyces albus, strains 6 and 9, Actinomyces levoris, strain 29 and Actinomyces gibsonii, strain 42 were of interest as organisms producing enzymes which lyzed the streptococcal cell wall without impairing its antigenic components.

[Spontaneous variability of Actinomyces werraensis].

The study of spontaneous variation of Act. werraensis not subjected to the treatment with mutagens and stabilizing selection revealed 6 variants within the homologous series of hereditary variation of apigmental actinomyces. The example of revealing the proactinomycete-like variants in Act. werraensis confirmed the prognosticating principle of the homologous series law in the hereditary variation of actinomycetes. Correlation between the cultural and morphological features of the spontaneous variants and the antibiotic-production level was shown. It was found that the variants of Act. werraensis had a high variation coefficient characteristic of the wild type actinomycetes. A possibility of increasing the biosynthetic activity of Act. werraensis by selection of spontaneous variants with artificial mutagenesis was shown.
