For the monitoring of patients with brain injury use is made of several scales which have wide international application. However, neither of these scales have a broad enough spectrum in the range of brainstem dysfunctions i.e. in patients who are most seriously ill. The scale of brainstem signs presented is as simple as possible, it lends itself for graphic extrapolation, there are used only simple symptoms which are commonly examined. This scale is very useful in communication between the specialized centre and the hospitals in which brain injured patients are first hospitalized.

The Sequelae of transcallosal surgery were assessed clinically in 15 children Isolated transection of the corpus callosum does not leave any pronounced when there are no lesions of the cerebral hemisphere. In cases with disturbances of some centers or analyzers, especially in the proprioceptive analyzer in the cortex of the parietal lobe, loss of recent memory, hypokinesia, ideomotor apraxia and astereognosia may develop. The sings are mixed and it is difficult to classify them. We can speak of disjunctive syndromes. The transcallosal approach is suitable in the case of lesions in the anterior part of the third and lateral ventricles.
Consciousness as the highest form of neuronal activity is very difficult to define. It is superior to unconditioned reflex activity and vigilance, and its most important sign is verbal signalization. Therefore, a scheme of evaluation of impaired consciousness was elaborated by the author, in which in the first group a strong painful impulse is the stimulus, in the second group of consciousness proper the word is the stimulus. This simple scheme of 8 points can be applied also by nurses.

The mutagenic activity of fenitrothion was studied in rats given 0,10,40 or 80 ppm of fenitrothion in the diet. The study combined the dominant lethal test with cytogenetic analysis of chromosomal aberrations. Dominant lethal mutations were investigated: 1. by their so-called tentative determination in single mating in P-to F3 generation males and females following 200 days exposure; 2. by assessing the effect of the agent at individual stages of spermatogenesis, with F2 and F4 generation males having been exposed for 100 days and mated to unexposed females for 10 weeks. Chromosome aberrations were analyzed in the bone marrow of F2 generation males following 200-days exposure and F3 generation (males) following 500-day exposure to a dose of 80 ppm. Negative results were obtained in all experiments in relation both to dose and generation. Hence fenitrothion is not considered to be a substance with a mutagenic activity. The metodical advantages of the proposed combination of reproduction and mutagenic-activity studies of an agent for toxicological evaluation are discussed.
