[Inter- and intrahemispheric disorders in certain types of mental pathology].

Asymmetry of EEG rhythms and intercortical interaction in patients with Major Depression and schizophrenia with negative and positive symptoms were studied by the method of brain mapping. It was shown that in depressive patients the disturbance between anterior and posterior brain areas takes place; in schizophrenics with negative symptoms left hemisphere and in schizophrenics with positive symptoms--right hemisphere are predominantly activated. These inter- and intrahemispheric disturbances correlate with some clinical manifestations of the patients.

[The disordered organization of the cortical processes in depression].

The study of depressive patients with the method of the EEG mapping revealed some stable differences from the norm. Firstly, in depression there are the disturbances of the definite cortical zones' activation: the right anterior and the left posterior cortical parts are hyperactivated while the left anterior and the right posterior-- relatively inhibited, evidently causing the informational processing disturbances. The important link of these disturbances--the disconnection of the anterior and the posterior cortical regions that could be called "transversal functional blockade". The second feature of the electrical activity of the brain in depression is the absence of the high frequency component of alpha-rhythm, that evidently in normal conditions is connected with the positive emotions mechanisms. The third feature is the difference in arousal reaction in the alpha- and beta-bands frequencies.

[Brain biopotential mapping in emotional and cognitive pathology].

The EEG rhythms spectral power and intracortical connections were studied in depressive and schizophrenic patients in four schematically outlined main cortical quadrants. In depressive patients two cortical quadrants--right anterior and left posterior ones appeared to be predominantly involved in negative emotions regulation. Alpha-rhythm spectral power and cortical connections in these areas were decreased, pointing to their relative hyperactivation and functional disturbances. Schizophrenics patients were divided into two groups--with the predominance of "positive" and "negative" symptoms. In the first group there was revealed the decrease of the most EEG rhythms spectral power only in parietal areas, on the second one--in all cortical areas. There was also the significant alpha-rhythm spectral power asymmetry, different in the two groups of schizophrenic patients. In "positive" schizophrenics the decrease of alpha-rhythm spectral power was revealed in parietal and occipital areas of the right hemisphere, and in "negative" ones--vice versa, these results pointing of the relatively higher activation of the right posterior quadrant in the former group and of the left posterior quadrant in the latter one. In the anterior cortical quadrants the intracortical connections were however higher in the left hemisphere in "positive" and in the right one--in "negative" schizophrenics. Thus, there are some contradictory results obtained by different methods in anterior and posterior cortical quadrants in each hemisphere, these results being of opposite directions in patients with "positive" and "negative" manifestations. "Region of interest" (ROI) in schizophrenics appeared to be predominantly the frontal and temporal ones, while the "Rhythm of interest"--beta2.

Adjustment Disorders↗

[The EEG rhythms and psychological indices of emotions in reactive depression].

Power and topographic distribution of the EEG rhythms (delta, theta 1, theta 2, alpha, beta 1, and beta 2) were compared with the reactive and personal anxiety levels (by Spilberger) and parameters of subjective emotional semantic space (obtained by the method of subjective scaling). A general decrease in the EEG power was observed in reactive depression, with the exception of the theta-rhythm, the power of which was higher than that in healthy persons. The increase in the theta 2 power in depression was correlated with activation of the right frontal area ("the zone of negative emotions"), and its decrease was associated with activation of the left frontal area ("responsible" for positive emotions), enhancement of positive emotions in semantic emotional space, and with a decrease in personal anxiety. High alpha activity in healthy persons was negatively correlated with the activation of the "zone of negative emotions" while a decrease in the alpha-rhythm power was associated with anxiety enhancement and decrease in contribution of positive emotions in the semantic space.

[The physiological indices of pre-examination stress].

The EEG spectral power characteristics and intracortical interactions were studied using brain mapping technique in students selected by their high level of anxiety and predisposition to stress. Before the examination, the activation of the anterior areas of the right hemisphere was higher than in norm by both indices. After the examination, the activation of these areas decreased. The obtained results, probably, reflect the neurophysiological dynamics of psychoemotional stress.
