Twenty one patients with lung cancer and twelve patients with unspecified lung disease were evaluated by means of delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity skin tests with tumour associated antigen. Nine of these patients with lung cancer and seven healthy persons were evaluated by in vitro assays of lymphocyte function to tumour associated antigen (TAA) from "Cancerotest Dessau". We did not find a statistically significant lymphocyte transformation to the testing concentration of TAA. For the same patients with lung cancer and controls we found statistically significant results of the mean lymphocyte transformation to phytohemagglutinin. It has been shown that the delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity skin tests demonstrated "false positive" reactions to TAA. It is possible that this is an expression of the irritative effects of TAA. It is estimated that the application of the antigens in this form presented and in this chosen examination conditions, does not allow for definite diagnostic assessment to be expected.
34 persons with CNSLD, but fit for work, were examined with the aim to record the degree of disturbance of pulmonary function and the underlying pathophysiological mechanism. The results were compared with 30 healthy subjects. The following function tests were carried out under resting conditions and bicycle ergometer exercises: Analysis of ventilation (FVC% pred., FEV1% FVC, RV% pred., RV% TLC), analysis of lung mechanic (Raw, CL) measurement of diffusion (DL, DM, Vc, DL% pred.) and analysis of lung inhomogeneity (RE/REO, V2/V1, CL6/CL100, deltaFN2/deltaV500, deltaFCO2/deltaV500,IHB). The results were analyzed and evaluated by using the digital computer C 8205. Persons suffering from CNSLD were showing among typical clinical symptoms the following disturbances of lung function: The obstructive ventilation disturbance stands in the foreground in connection with signs of inhomogeneity of lung mechanics and ventilation. While the resistance already shows the airway obstruction objectively under resting conditions, the decreased compliance is measurable at first under exercise. The disturbance of diffusion, which is pointed out, is mainly a latent decreased diffusing capacity of alveolo-capillary membrane. These disturbance of diffusion gets more importance because the inhomogeneity of lung hides the real disturbance of diffusion. The pathophysiological consequence of disturbed partial functions of respiration is the latent hypoxaemia without hypercapnia, therefore the signs of respiratory partial insufficiency.
In 61 patients with mostly diffuse lung diseases 64 transbronchial lung biopsies have been performed by means of rigid biopsy forceps in general anesthesia. 31 of the 36 pathological bioply specimens were diagnostically helpful or represented the clinical diagnosis. Complications were moderate bleeding in three cases and pneumothorax (3 cases). One patient died after myocardial reinfarction occuring under general anesthesia. Transbronchial lung biopsy is indicated when routine methods fail to establish the diagnosis of pulmonary lesions, particularly in patients having higher operative risks. More use of the transbronchial forceps biopsy is expected to improve the diagnostic yield, especially in patients with miliary pulmonary lesions.

In a representative study, 450 elderly men and women over the age of 60 years were--besides other questions--asked if they had any sexual activity within the last 12 months. Not regarding the gender of these persons, but rather just the marital status, i.e. if they still have a partner, two-thirds of the old people between 61-70 years and one-third of the group older than 70 years, who still have a partner, had sexual activity. We then looked for a relationship between sexual activity and special aspects of personality, measured by the Giessen Test. We found that older people who still have sexual activity describe themselves als less depressed, with more social contacts, and with a higher social potency than elderly people with no sexual activity.
