[Clinical features and treatment of cutaneous carcinoid].

An exemplary case of a 67-year-old patient with multiple cutaneous metastases of a pulmonary carcinoid primary tumor is presented. The cardinal symptom was severe painfulness of the skin tumors. With chemotherapy the tumor disease advanced. In presenting this case and providing a review of the literature, the primary importance of surgery even in the case of a metastasizing carcinoid is emphasized.

Carbohydrate metabolism in rat kidney: heterogeneous distribution of glycolytic and gluconeogenic key enzymes.

The distribution pattern of the unidirectional enzymes of gluconeogenesis and glycolysis, fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (EC 3.1.3.11) and phosphofructokinase (EC 2.7.1.11), within the nephron was studied by the microdissection and oil-well techniques according to LOWRY and PASSONNEAU [11]. Fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase activity was found to be highest in the proximal convolution, whereas phosphofructokinase revealed its highest activity in the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop. Starvation and NH4Cl acidosis led to an increase of fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase activity in the proximal convolution. These results indicate a clear separation of the glucose synthesizing and degrading pathways within the nephron, which is maintained in conditions that stimulate gluconeogenesis.

Liposarcoma with unusual neurological manifestations.

Central nervous system involvement in liposarcoma is rare, the only symptom reported in the literature being local compression of the spinal cord. An exceptional case with peripheral nerve involvement due to local recurrence, in addition to spinal cord compression and cavernous sinus syndrome due to metastases is reported.

[Dangerousness of blank fright guns and salute rifles].

According to the German law salute-fire guns altered weapons with a barrel length of more than 60 cm. They have inside the barrel special constructions, which are guiding the gunshot residues under high pressure to the muzzle. Therefore they own an high potential of injury, like blank-cartridge guns with short barrels.

[Behavioral therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and cognitive-analytic methods in treatment of anorexia].

This paper describes the current state of behavioural, cognitive-behavioural and cognitive-analytical treatments of anorexia nervosa and the underlying theoretical models. Purely behavioural treatment methods have been evaluated in a number of single case studies. Although effective in terms of increasing body weight, these methods are obsolete in view of their unpleasant side-effects. Cognitive-behavioural and cognitive-analytical therapies are much more appropriate for these patients given their complex symptomatology and frequently ambivalent attitude to treatment. However, so far evaluations of these treatments are rare. The reasons for this are discussed.
