Delivery outcome among physiotherapists in Sweden: is non-ionizing radiation a fetal hazard?

A cohort study was made on 2,043 infants born to 2,018 females registered as physiotherapists at the time of pregnancy during 1973 to 1978. The incidence of perinatal death, serious malformation, short gestational duration, and low birth weight was slightly below the expected with consideration given to maternal age and parity distribution. Information on occupational exposure (use of shortwave, microwave, and ultrasonic equipment, X-ray exposure, use of electrostimulator or hexachlorophene-containing soaps) was obtained in a case-control study within the cohort from mail questionnaires with a 93% response rate. The only positive finding was a higher incidence of shortwave equipment use among the females with a dead or malformed infant than among controls. Various explanations for this finding are discussed.

A stabilometric technique for evaluation of lower limb instabilities.

Stabilometry is a technique designed to register postural equilibrium control. This investigation used a computerized strain gauge force plate to measure sway movements in the frontal plane with the patient standing on one leg. Fifty-five young healthy individuals were studied as a reference group and to determine the reproducibility of the method. The clinical population consisted of 14 patients with unilateral injuries to the lateral ligaments of the ankle. These were measured, both with and without an ankle brace. The different parameters used to describe the body sway could well discriminate between the injured and the uninjured leg. When the brace was used the effect was obvious and none of the parameters showed any significant difference compared to the uninjured leg.

The effect of physiotherapy on standing balance in chronic anterior cruciate ligament insufficiency.

Body sway movements in the frontal plane in a single-limbed stance test were used to assess postural control in 26 patients with chronic anterior cruciate ligament insufficiency. The injured and the noninjured legs were tested before the patients were committed to physiotherapy for 3 to 6 months. Follow-up tests were made after 3, 12, and 36 months. Significant disturbance of the balance of both legs was found before training, compared with a reference group of normal subjects. Values of the noninjured leg were normalized after 3 months of training, but the injured leg still showed an increased body sway. Normal balance parameters on the injured side were found at examination after 12 months. Follow-up examination after 36 months proved persistent normalization of the single-limbed balance on both sides.

Function following mega total hip arthroplasty compared with conventional total hip arthroplasty and healthy matched controls.

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) with the use of a Mega prosthesis was a successful surgical procedure in the management of tumors of the hip as well as in revision THA with loss of bone stock. Passive hip motion and strength of hip muscles, walking ability, and activities of daily living in nine such cases compared well with the function following conventional THA. Limp and positive Trendelenburg sign were more common after Mega THA. Dislocation of the prosthesis occurred in 2/14 cases. Fracture of the femoral condyle occurred in one case. Another case had stem fatigue failure of a thin stem.

Musculoskeletal disorders in construction workers.

Physical factors that contribute to musculoskeletal disorders in construction workers are described, and the clinical findings associated with muscular, tendon, articular, spinal, and peripheral nerve entrapment disorders are reviewed. Psychosocial factors and individual factors such as the worker's age, smoking habits, and endurance are considered.
