[Centenarian--a contribution to longevity research].

During the last two decades an increase of research on centenarians can be observed. There are two aspects, which were analyzed mainly: 1. the problems of antecedents of extreme longevity and 2. the state of psycho-physical well-being of these very old persons. We analyzed some newer international studies on centenarians and discussed especially the findings of the "Würzburger Centenarian-Study" of Hans Franke and his staff. Aside from this a report is given on a biographical study on 40 centenarians from the Bonn-Cologne area under the special aspect of coping-styles. From these and other studies a high degree of interindividual variability can be concluded even in this very old-age group. There apparently is no age-limit for the maintenance of interindividual differences in aging as predicted by some authors. And there is no general age-limit for the maintenance of independence and social competence.

[Potentials in old age--also a political task].

Growth of potentials in the elderly can be promoted by political measures. It is an essential task for politicians to perceive the potentials in the elderly, support public initiatives for the elderly, and support maintenance of independency. Gerontological contributions important for politics for the elderly are discussed. Political measures are recommended.

[5-generation families: some data on great-great-grandparents in West Germany].

From data of 400 five-generation families living in the Federal Republic of Germany different ways of interaction between the generations are demonstrated. These data point to a very high degree of integration of the very old family members and reject the thesis of a more or less disintegration of the older generation. The interaction between the 5th and the 4th generation is closer than these between the 5th and and the 3rd or 2nd generation; this may be explained by the different cohort-specific socialization-histories and by factors of secular change.

Research on aging in behavioral sciences in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The paper reports on cross-sectional and longitudinal studies on psychological, sociological, as well as physical aspects of aging completed or going on in the Federal Republic of Germany. Most of these studies are referring to community aged and point to the complex conditions of consistency and change in cognitive functioning and personality adjustment during the middle and later years. They stress the high degree of interindividual variability of the aging process and ask for a differential instead of a normative gerontology.

[Conditions and processes of aging - biographical determinants].

The high degree of interindividual variability of processes of aging is mentioned and biographical factors influencing age stage and processes of aging were analyzed. A review of empirical biographical studies is presented, which emphasize a conceptualization of behavior in older age at the interaction of past experience, current situation, and future time perspective of the individual. As an example it is discussed how the mother experiences and reacts to her last child's leaving home ("empty-nest-reaction"). An analysis of the data of the BLSA (1965-1977) demonstrated many patterns of change. It could be shown that there exists consistency as well as variability in personality variables. It could be shown that the biographical and social context was closely related to these interindividual differences in consistency and change. Conditions are multidimensional rather than uniform. This high degree of interindividual variability of change calls for a differential gerontology.

[Contribution to the history of gerontology in Germany in the 2nd half of our century].

In this paper some trends of gerontology during the last 45 years in Germany are described. A survey of the development of gerontology in the former GDR is followed by an analysis of the "Zeitschrift für Alternsforschung" from 1980-1990. The main result is the predominance of publications on the care system since the middle of the 1980s. With regard to the development of gerontology in the western part of Germany, an analysis of publications in the "Zeitsschrift für Gerontologie" from 1968-1991 shows changes in the main topics during this period. Until the middle of the 1970s there was a predominance of publications in the field of: intelligence, learning, memory and perception. The emphasis of publications from 1977-1985 was on stress and coping. In the middle of the 1980s there was an increasing interest in the analysis of social network and competence in the elderly. The paper discusses these trends of gerontological research in the eastern and western parts of Germany.
