Effect of physical stress on 5-hydroxytryptamine uptake kinetics (Km and Vmax) in human platelets.

Platelet 5-HT uptake is possibly one mechanism by which plasma level of 5-HT is physiologically controlled. This mechanism may be of importance in the vascular 5-HT mediated tone and protect against thrombolysis and cardiovascular events. Physical stress is known to affect various platelet functions. The aim of this study was to investigate whether or not physical stress has any influence on platelet 5-HT uptake kinetics. In healthy adult persons (n = 13) the maximal rate (Vmax) and Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) of platelet 5-HT uptake (in vitro) were determined before (a), immediately after (b) and 1 hour after 50 min of squash playing (c). Immediately after squash Vmax and Km were elevates significantly as compared to the values before squash [Vmax(a): 77.0 +/- 31.0 (SD) pmol 5-HT/10(8) pl./min, Vmax(b): 109.9 +/- 48.4 (SD) pmol 5-HT/10(8) pl./min, p less than 0.01; Km(a): 5.16 +/- 1.73 (SD) x 10(-7) mol/1, Km(b): 7.59 +/- 2.37 (SD) x 10(-7) mol/1, p less than 0.05]. The percent elevations of Vmax (47%) and Km (42%) were of the same range. One hour after squash the values of Vmax(c) and Km(c) were found to be normalized. It is concluded that physical stress, like squash playing, does not affect net platelet 5-HT uptake in healthy persons at physiological plasma 5-HT concentrations. The significant increases of Vmax and Km of platelet 5-HT uptake are suggested to be adaptation reactions to keep the platelet net 5-HT uptake constant.

[Chronic reflux esophagitis with endobrachyesophagus and multifocal adenocarcinoma].

In approximately 10% of all cases of endobrachesophagus a malignant degeneration occurs. A frequent endoscopic and bioptic control of the endobrachesophagus is the prognostic decision in order for a developing adenocarcinom to be identified in the early stages. Our casuistry demonstrates the problematic nature of the diagnostic and therapy of a multifocal adenocarcinom in an endobrachesophagus.

Detection of actin and localization of phytochrome in the green alga Mougeotia by monoclonal antibodies.

In order to get insight into the topological relationship of phytochrome and the actin cytoskeleton in Mougeotia, phytochrome was localized by indirect immunofluorescence in fixed protoplasts of Mougeotia with the monoclonal antibody Z-3B1, raised against purified Zea mays phytochrome (Schneider-Poetsch et al 1988, Planta 173, 61-72). So far no detection of phytochrome in the immunoblot was possible by this antibody, in contrast to the detection of actin by the monoclonal anti-actin C4 (Lessard 1988, Cell Motil. Cytoskeleton 10, 349-362). Preliminary results are presented on attempts to enrich plant factors which interfere with the G-/F-actin equilibrium, as probed by the viscometric falling ball assay.

[Peritoneal aluminosis after alugramin treatment of decubital ulcers (author's transl)].

The occurrence of unusual peritoneal and subserous deposits of metallic aluminum granules in a 34 years old man after local alugramin treatment of decubital ulcers lasting for about 10 weeks is described. He died of an apallic syndrome approximately 3 months after a head-brain-injury due to an accident and terminal bronchopneumonia. The peritoneal aluminosis was diagnosed at autopsy as a secondary finding. An inflammatory peritoneal reaction was not notified. The lymphatic ganglion system is assumed to be the route of transport.

[Poverty in old age (author's transl)].

The legitimate claim on social assistance riveted in the Federal Legislation on Social Welfare and deduced from the welfare-state-postulate of the Constitution is only partially valid (obligatory assistance only). Applying this claim substantially is legally tied to discretionary decisions of the administration. Handling such estimates in a restrictive way makes the legitimate claim invalide. Social values are significantly determined by equivalent-maxims. Claims on social assistance, however, are not being deduced from preperformances (in a judical sense in regard of pensions) but are being derived from a diffuse claim on a social state incured with the odium of statutory relief for the necessitous. It is empirically provable that the causes for need of social assistance are of a social kind. Therefore, the claim on social assistance can only be a claim to "reparation". This understanding could be seen as an adequate basis for a progressive administration of social welfare.

Immuneglobulin investigations in inflammatory diseases.

1. The agar electrophoresis of the cerebrospinal fluid and the quantitative immune globulin determination contribute essentially to an assessment of the immunity state in inflammatory diseases of the CNS. 2. It is necessary to distinguish protein augmentation due to brain-barrier disturbances (accompanying proteinosis of the cerebrospinal fluid), which we find in metabolic and traumatic diseases, from a genuine increase in cerebrospinal fluid protein. 3. Autochthonous formation of cerebrospinal fluid protein can be demonstrated by means of quantitative IgG, IgA and gamma3-globulin determination.
