Dextroamphetamine and individual susceptibility to reinforcement in verbal operant conditioning.

The present investigation was designed to study the relationships between extraversion, d-amphetamine and modes of reinforcement in verbal operant conditioning. A factorial design involving two levels of extraversion (extraverts and introverts), two reinforcement conditions ('good' and 'electric shock') and three treatments (placebo and two doses, 7.5 and 12.5 mg, of d-amphetamine) with repeated measures on the last factor was used. Sixty postgraduate female students were individually subjected to Taffel's verbal conditioning procedure. The study supported the following conclusions: (1) under the placebo condition, the extraverted subjects condition better with the rewarding reinforcer while the introverted subjects condition better with the punishing reinforcer; (2) under the influence of d-amphetamine, the extraverted subjects condition better with the punishing reinforcer while the conditioning scores of introverted subjects decrease with the punishing reinforcer but are not influenced with the rewarding reinforcer.

Phenobarbitone and the relationship between extraversion and reinforcement in verbal operant conditioning.

The present investigation was designed to study the relationship between phenobarbitone, extraversion and modes of reinforcement in verbal operant conditioning. A factorial design involving three treatments (placebo and two doses, 30 and 100 mg, of phenobarbitone), two levels of extraversion (extraverts and introverts) and two reinforcement conditions ('good' and 'electric shock') with repeated measures on the first factor, was used. Sixty postgraduate female students were individually subjected to Taffel's verbal conditioning procedure. The results support the following conclusions: (1) under the placebo condition, the extraverted subjects condition better with the rewarding reinforcer ('good') while the introverted subjects condition better with the punishing reinforcer ('electric shock'); (2) under the influence of the smaller dose of the drug, as compared with the placebo, the conditioning scores of extraverted subjects increase with the punishing reinforcer but decrease with the rewarding reinforcer, while the conditioning scores of the introverted subjects decrease with the punishing reinforcer, under the influence of the larger dose of the drug, but remain uninfluenced with the rewarding reinforcer.

Curcuma longa (Linn) drops in corneal wound healing.

In this study, an attempt has been made to evaluate the cortisone like inhibitory activity on healing of wounds of curcuma longa extracts-aqueous extract (2.8%) and alcoholic extract (1.125%) on the healing of superficial and penetrating corneal wounds in albino rabbits. It was observed that curcuma longa aqueous drops (a) definitely delayed healing of superficial corneal wounds (P less than 0.001), (b) delayed healing of penetrating corneal wounds also and markedly reduced the tensile strength of corneal wounds (P less than 0.02), when comparison was made with placebo and preservative drops.

Effect of intrauterine administration of antiprostaglandin drugs on implantation in the rat.

Three antiprostaglandin drugs, acetylsalicylic acid, indomethacin and ibuprofen, were administered intraluminally at different does to pregnant rats on Day 4 of pregnancy. It was observed that ibuprofen administered at a dose of 400 micrograms inhibited implantation in all rats. Ibuprofen when administered at a lower dose of 100 or 200 micrograms on Day 4 of pregnancy or at a dose of 400 micrograms on Day 3 or 5 of pregnancy did not exert such an antiimplantation effect. Acetylsalicylic acid and indomethacin also induced, but to a lesser extent, an antiimplantation effect when administered at a dose of 400 micrograms on Day 4 of pregnancy.

The relationship of two equine mycoplasmas to Mycoplasma mycoides.

Two unidentified mycoplasmas, N3 and N11, isolated from the respiratory tract of horses, were found to cross-react with strains of M. mycoides subsp. mycoides in indirect immunofluorescence tests, growth-inhibition tests carried out by the running drop/agar-well method, and in complement-fixation and double immunodiffusion tests. Serologically, the equine mycoplasmas were not completely identical with any of the reference strains of M. mycoides with which they were compared. Their cultural characteristics, ability to digest coagulated serum and casein, and survival at 45 degrees C, however, suggested that they were more closely related to strains of M. mycoides subsp. mycoides, such as Y-goat, which are found in goats, than to strains of that subspecies which are pathogenic for cattle.

Unidirectional complete heart block.

Forty-two patients with complete heart block were subjected to electrophysiological studies wherein apart from localization of the site of the conduction defect, ventricular pacing was done to assess ventriculo-atrial (VA) conduction and concealed ventriculo-nodal (VN) conduction. There was evidence of retrograde conduction in the presence of orthograde CHB in 22 patients (52.4 per cent). Fifteen patients (35.7 per cent) had VA conduction and seven (16.6 per cent) had concealed VN conduction. In patients with supra-Hisian CHB, three of the nine patients had VA conduction while of the 11 patients with intra-Hisian CHB, six had retrograde conduction (four with VA and two with concealed VN conduction). In the infra-Hisian CHB group, of the 22 patients, eight had VA conduction and five had concealed conduction. Incremental ventricular pacing induced VA Wenckebach periods at VPR from 110 to 133/minute with a VA interval of 110 to 130 msec. In view of the induction of Wenckebach VA periods, the recording of retrograde H potentials in some cases, and relatively long VA conduction time, it is surmised that retrograde conduction in the presence of orthograde CHB takes place through the AV conduction system.
