Effects of cadmium on the immune system of mice.

Chronic oral exposure of mice to Cd++ inhibits cell-mediated immunity of delayed type hypersensitivity induced by sheep red blood cells (SRBC). No effect was detected on humoral immune response to SRBC. Spleen cells derived from mice exposed to Cd++ showed in vitro enhanced response to T and B cell mitogens. These results demonstrate that Cd++ exposure alters the immune system of mice.

Lanthanon-induced hepatotoxicity and its prevention by pretreatment with the same lanthanon.

Intravenous injection of the light lanthanon praseodymium nitrate (10 mg/kg) into rats causes a marked liver toxicity which becomes manifest in hypoglycemia, inhibition of RNA and protein synthesis and accumulation of fat in liver tissue. All these effects can be nearly abolished by pretreating rats with a small dose (5 mg/kg) of the same lanthanon. This is neither due to a decreased uptake into the liver nor to an increased excretion rate of the lanthanon. It is assumed that the pretreatment may increase unspecific binding sites or reversibly block them, thus protecting the organism from the irreversible lethal effect.

[Lupins - a new source of food for Andean countries. 5. Traditional methods of debittering of lupins by water].

The bitter taste of lupin alkaloids can be sensorially detected in water within ppm-range. The strength of the taste diminishes as follows: sparteine, D-Lupanin-perchlorate, lupinine, isolupinine and hydroxylupanine. The swelling capacity of lupin seeds presents different characteristics according to the species. The swelling rapidity is in L. albus somehow inferior to that of L. mutabilis. The absorption of water decreases in hot water, and the swelling rapidity increases. For domestic debittering it is recommended to cook whole lupin seeds during half an hour and to debitter them for 3 days in flowing water. The isoelectric point of the protein of L. mutabilis lies between pH 4 and 4.5.

Ultrastructural and histochemical investigations of spindle-shaped corpuscles in phagocytic cells of lymph nodes.

In connection with various diseases, spindle-shaped or roundish 2-15 micrometer large corpuscles with a yellowish-green, partly brown color are found in phagocytic cells of lymph nodes of various localisation. There are three groups according to staining and ultrastructural characteristics. I. Strongly Fe+++ positive corpucles only, 2. corpuscles with a positive PAS-reaction, Ziehl-Neelsen and Sudan black B stain and slight iron adsorption, 3. particles with irregular stainability. Ultrastructurally, the spindle bodies of Group I have a uniform membrane, double in some sections and a narrow, finely granular rim, in which 50 A large iron micelles are stored. The electrondense center contains structures which may correspond to remainders of cell organelles. The similarly shaped particles of Group 2 have a homogeneous, electron-dense center and sometimes half-moon-shaped, homogeneous, less dense appositions. A dense round center with finely honey-combed translucencies and marginal vacuoles characterizes the irregularly shaped, in part spindly corpuscles of Group 3. The energy-dispersion X-ray analysis indicates only iron for the particles of Group I. A relation of the corpuscles to specific diseases, especially to sarcoidosis and certain therapeutic measures, is not evident.

Localization of proliferating cells in lymphatic tissues triggered by dextran sulfate.

Mice were injected with dextran sulfate in the presence or absence of various amounts of sheep red blood cells. The incorporation of thymidine into the proliferating cells of spleen, lymph nodes and thymus was investigated using autoradiographic and histologic techniques. Dextran sulfate triggered selective proliferation of cells localized in the marginal zone of the white pulp of the spleen. The uptake of colloid carbon particles was also enhanced by dextran sulfate in this area of the spleen. The results are consistent with the suggestion that dextran sulfate triggers proliferation of non-thymus-derived cells probably a sub-population of B-lymphocytes and activates phagocytic cells.

[Lupine, a contribution to the human food supply. 3. Nutritional physiological study with lupine (Lupinus albus) flour].

Lupinus albus flour doses of 58.9 +/- 9.6 g have been given to 20 persons. This sweet lupine flour has been digestible without complications in all cases. There have been no significant changes of hemoglobine, hematocrite, total protein, urea, bilirubine, and SGOT in the blood. So the lupine may be used for improvement of protein supply in men under the criteria that (1) the alkaloid content of the seed does not exceed 0.02%, (2) the seed itself contains no secondary fungi which may cause a lupinosis.

[Lupine, a contribution to the human food supply. 4. Acceptability of Lupinus alba flour].

48 different dishes enriched with lupinus albus flour have been tested by 20 persons. The test duration has been 4 weeks. Meals and products with lupine admixtures have been judged equally with concern to corresponding conventional dishes. Farinaceous products had the best test results. Therefore, it is recommended for Peru to add lupine flour when producing bread, biscuits, sauces, soups, and noodles (maccaronis etc.). The test time had no influence to the test results.

Replacement of tunica albuginea of corpus cavernosum penis using human dura. Experimental study on dogs.

The tunica albuginea of corpus cavernosum penis was excised and replaced with human dura in experiments on 11 dogs. The surface of the implant epithelialized within three weeks, and later the implant was replaced by autologous tissue with no scarring and shrinkage. After resection of placques in Peyronie's disease the tunica albuginea can be replaced with specially treated human dura.

Myocardial hypertrophy, myocarditis, and myocardial fibrosis in a long term experiment.

In a long term experiment, a systematic analysis was made of the cellular reaction of the myocardium and the lymphatic system to application of antigenic substances. Several groups of mice received single or repeated injections of human serum, serum from rabbits with antiheart antibodies, mouse spleen cells immunized to myocardium, and human or mouse cardiac homogenate with and without incomplete or complete Freund's adjuvant. After injection of human and mouse heart homogenate, hypertrophy of myocardial cells was the first alteration seen; then followed focal myocarditis and after 10 months, interstitial fibrosis. Simultaneously, in the lymphorecticular tissue, there was marked proliferation of reticulum cells, lymphocytes, and plasma cells, as well as an enlargement of secondary follicles. All the animals produced antibodies to the injected antigens. Following injection of human serum or serum from rabbits with cardiac specific antibodies or spleen cells, no morphological changes were seen in the hearts.
