Impairment to viability of neutrophils and lymphocytes by angular psoralens and UV-radiation.

The angular psoralen derivative, 4,5'-dimethylangelicin (Dm Agn), both without and with UV-radiation induces under adequate conditions a higher percentage of lethally damaged cultured human polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) as compared with angelicin (Agn). In general, PMN photosensitized with Dm Agn are less resistant than similarly photosensitized lymphocytes. These results suggest that Dm Agn might be used to improve the photochemo (PUVA-)therapy of skin diseases where PMN are of pathogenic importance.

[Angioplastic sarcoma of facial skin].

Report on a 77 year old man with angiosarcoma of the face. Characteristic features were the diffuse onset with indurated pale violaceous erythematous swelling of the face, followed by an ulceration and secondary infection, as well as the infiltration of the parotid and the absence of metastases. Histologically seemingly benign haemangiomatous capillary-like structures were found in the periphery of the tumor and richly cellular solid sarcomatous proliferations in the centre. The palliative X-ray treatment did not alter tumor progression. Early radical resection is recommended as the therapy of choice. It does, however, not prevent the downhill course of the disease in most cases. Clinical features and natural history of angiosarcoma of the face and scalp were reviewed for six patients.

[Side effects of dermatologic local therapy].

After application of dermatics systemic as well as topical side effects are to be expected, the latter also by usage of remedies and cosmetics. Even though life-threatening or lethal complications caused by potent substances like mercury compounds, phenols, salicylic acid, boric acid and others seldom have been observed, it is necessary to prevent them completely. Most frequent are allergic contact eczemas, but occasionally also toxic irritations of the skin can be registered. The side effects discussed, especially those caused by steroids and antibiotics, demand strong criteria for indication, scientific mode of administration and intensification of the topical efforts for standardization of dermatological treatment.
